The Divine Comedy: Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition), by Dante Alighieri

A stunning 3-in-1 deluxe edition of one of the great works of Western literature

An epic masterpiece and a foundational work of the Western canon, The Divine Comedy describes Dante's descent into Hell with Virgil as his guide; his ascent of Mount Purgatory and reunion with his dead love, Beatrice; and, finally, his arrival in Heaven. Examining questions of faith, desire, and enlightenment and furnished with semiautobiographical details, Dante's poem is a brilliantly nuanced and moving allegory of human redemption. This acclaimed blank verse translation is published here for the first time in a one-volume edition.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Review
"The perfect balance of tightness and colloquialism . . . Likely to be the best modern version of Dante."
— Bernard O'Donoghue

"Kirkpatrick brings a more nuanced sense of the Italian and a more mediated appreciation of the poem's construction than nearly all of his competitors."
— The Times (London)

"We gain much from Kirkpatrick's fidelity to syntax and nuance. . . . His introduction . . . tells you, very readable indeed, pretty much all you need for a heightened appreciation of the work."
— The Guardian (London)

Missing All The Good Parts
By Severian
Kirkpatrick's translation of Dante's Italian is mediocre at best with many oddities cropping up in his translation which apparently are efforts to arbitrarily differentiate his work from the many other historic and recent Dante translations offered. E.G. Inferno I, 32 " a leopard light and lively, svelte and quick" menaces Dante (or does it? It sounds like a charming little kitty!). Also Inf XV 110-11 "If you yearn to set your eyes on such-like mangy scabs". None of this odd verbiage appears in Mandelbaum, Ciardi, or Hollander, so it looks like either Kirkpatrick is a geniue with rare insight into the Italian language or (my theory) he is just sprucing things up a bit for the sake of trying to be unique among the masses of Dantean translators.

For the same reason, he also likes to throw Dante's Latin quotes in untranslated (for the effect he says) e.g. Inf I, 111 "from which invidia has set her loose" or I, 64 "to him I screamed my Miserere". Does this really achieve any astistic or pedagogical goal or is it just an attempt to sound different from other translations? I felt unimpressed by these efforts, and in comparison to the many other translations I've read of Dante, I thought Kirkpatrick's over-emphasized variant approach added no additional interpretive meaning or aesthetic beauty.

The original three volume set of Kirkpatrick's version of the Comedy added at least excellent detailed introductions to each canticle along with detailed commentary for each canto, along with briefer line by line notes. This Penguin omnibus has eliminated all of the commentaries, and combined the three once separate introductions together into a patchwork essay that is about a quarter of the length of the combined three introductions from the separate volumes.

One looks to a Dante translation to have a mix of literary merit and / or pedagogical clarity. As mentioned above, I think RK's translation in and of itself does not have much going for it. The original three separate volumes at least had useful commentaries and intro essays, but these are now almost entirely missing leaving only the briefer more pedestrian line by line notes. The remaining notes aren't awful and are better than the one volume Comedy notes in say Nichols' translation or James' attempt at non-annotated Dante, but are nowhere near as good as the Ciardi Commedia one volume set. For most readers, the support "apparatus" to the text is as important as the quality of the translation, so the gutted intros and missing commentaries vitiate whatever merit Kirkpatrick's original volumes had.

As compared to other one volume Comedies, I think Mandelbaum is superior artistically and about as good in terms of notes. Sisson is also better artistically and has excellent notes. Ciardi is an acquired tastes aesthetically (I like him but the "dummy terza rima" he uses does not sit well with all readers) and his notes are the industry standard for single volume clarity and completeness. The Nichols translation is my favorite in terms of literary merit, but the notes are somewhat lacking. For the patient Dante enthusiast who can afford three separate volumes, and who can also take the time to read lengthy though excellent notes, the Hollanders are still the best way to come to understand Dante.

In any case, you see my point, I hope. There are many better options out that, and the truncated exposition and "hey, look at me!!" attempts at translational showmanship of this Kirkpatrick Commedia create a compelling case to seek out one (or more) of the alternatives. This is a tin-eared translation with minimal interpretive support at a high price.

I adore these Penguin deluxe editions. The redesigned covers and the deckle edged pages make it a must own for many of my favorite works. This is Dante, you need it on your shelf, and you need to know it to understand western culture. If you are reading it in English, grab this edition.

Any Sound You Can Imagine: Making Music / Consuming Technology, by Paul Théberge

Recent innovations in musical instrument design are not simply a response to the needs of musicians, writes Paul Théberge; they also have become "a driving force with which musicians must contend." He argues that digital synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers in studio production and in the home have caused musicians to rely increasingly on manufacturers for both the instruments themselves as well as the very sounds and musical patterns that they use to make music.

Musical practices have thus become allied with a new type of consumer practice that is altogether different from earlier relationships between musicians and their instruments as a means of production. Théberge places these developments within a broad social and historical perspective that examines the development of the musical instrument industry, particularly the piano industry, the economic and cultural role of musicians' magazines and computer networks, and the fundamental relationships between musical concepts, styles, and technology.

“A fine and timely study. There is no other text offering a sustained analysis of the social conditions of technological innovation in the design of music technologies. Astute and remarkably pleasurable to read.” (Andrew Goodwin)

“What starts out as an investigation of a surprisingly neglected aspect of popular music studies―the technology of music making―ends up as a far reaching meditation on Western music history and culture. Any Sound You Can Imagine is obviously a major contribution to cultural sociology: on almost every page it raises fascinating and important questions about what musicians do, what music means, and what listeners want.” (Simon Frith)

chock full of intelligent insights
By A Customer
Amidst all the inflated rhetoric that either denounces technology for making music "inauthentic" or celebrates it for creating new postmodern forms of community, Paul Theberge's "Any Sound You Can Imagine" is a welcome oasis of intelligence. Rather than choosing sides in what often becomes a simplistic debate, Theberge provides a balanced account that, uniquely, puts digital instruments in a broad social and historical perspective. This book has much to recommend it, but the high points for me are the last several chapters, in which Theberge formulates a theory of how instruments work not only practically but symbolically, that goes beyond almost any other book on the subject. As such, "Any Sound You Can Imagine" is heady stuff, but it's also accessibly written. Anyone who thinks they know something about electronic music, whether it be techno or the electronic avant garde, should read this book and see how many of their assumptions are left standing at the end.

Excellent Evaluation of Modern Music
By Charles T. Hardy
An exceedingly well researched and elegantly written text explaining the social and cultural impact of electronic music and especially synthesizer technology on musicians of all levels. This is a most important piece of work, and while written at an almost "academic" and scholarly level, is a book every modern musician will find valuable.

5 Novellas Altogether
By pw reader
I must not have read the description of this closely since I did not realize that Almost Midnight is several novellas published under one cover by C. C. Hunter. I have not read anything by this author before but has seen the name associated with urban/paranormal. I think that the reading of these would be greatly enhanced if the reader is already familiar with the Shadow Fall Series.

Each novella is interesting but really wets the appetite for more about this world and the creatures that inhabit it. In longer stories there would be more world building so that the reader could visualize the place and time in which these vampires and other creature dwell.

The novellas take place at different intervals in the series, they are:

Turned At Dusk – How Della lost her groove as a vampire. I found her rude and brash, not my type of heroine.

Saved At Sunrise – How Della finds her groove still as a vampire.

Unbreakable - Della’s mystery vampire, Chase. A close second as a favorite. Della should definitely try to hold on to this one.

Spellbinder- my favorite and the easiest for me to follow. The main character is likable but gets herself in a mess; murder kind of mess.

Fierce - Fredericka who is troubled but amiable. Lots of unresolved issues with her. I would like to read more about her.

Fans of this series will be delighted to have all the novellas but a bonus new one altogether. For those new to the series like me, this might not be the best way to start the series.

Even if you are new to the series, C.C Hunter does an amazing job of introducing things and pulling you deeply within the vortex
By Samantha Reed
Just, let me get this out of the way real quick. *SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*

Alright, I’m composed now, sort of. I love, love, love the Shadow Falls series. I’ve been a fan of Kylie’s story since it started and I have followed it faithfully till now. That’s years of devotion people, so yea, I’m excited.

Almost Midnight is a collection of short stories, previously published for e readers, that tells the various stories of Kylie’s sidekicks and BFF’s now in print for the first time. So, you can imagine my excitement and complete bewilderment when I got a package in the mail and out popped this glorious thing. I might have died a little.

Novella numero uno is Turned at Dark, a story illustrating how the amazingly sassy Della became a vampire. We get an inside glimpse into her home life, of everything about her – and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me go all gooey inside. I have to say, this might not be my favorite story of the bunch, but it’s definitely high up there on my list because DELLA. The world building was ehh, I was sort of looking forward into gaining a deeper understanding of the vampires because they seem so aloof – but it was still just enough to wet my appetite, as it were.
Next we have Saved at Sunrise, the story of Della’s first mission with the FRU (The supernatural world’s FBI – they’re awesome). This one picks up right after Turned at Dusk, so it was both really easy to get into and to fall head over heels in love with. I mean, come on, Della being more badass than usual? Yes please. This story had some more hard core development compared to the first one, it really opened my eyes to Della’s character so much more. I loved it, I really did.
Then there is Unbreakable, the one book that broke my heart into a million tiny pieces. This, though somewhat unconnected to the other stories, is by far my favorite. I think it was the structure – this novella was gift wrapped in an emotionally charged batch of news stories that rip your heart out. It is real, surprisingly raw, and oh so satisfying. This book isn’t in your face supernatural, not like the others, it is more of a gentle, subtle approach into something that turns out to be so much bigger than you ever expected.
Next up: Spellbinder. Oh Miranda how I’ve missed you, you snarky little wench. Let’s just say, there is a mystery and Miranda tries her hand at figuring it out – and, if you know anything about Miranda, just picture how that goes. She is one hell of a comedic source of every possible infomercial you could imagine the supernatural world would need. Miranda is the poster girl, and it’s adorably frustrating. This ended up being a light hearted, fluffy, good timey sort of thing and it was perfect.
And then Fierce. HOLY BATCRAP ROBIN I’M IN LOVE *flails*. Fredericka, aka: the person I hate the most besides the obvious bad guys in the Shadow Falls books, is our protagonist in this beautiful mash up of issues. She has a serious character arc in the small amount of page time she gets, and it was lovely. She struggles with her own emotions and yet she also seems to be steadfast in her beliefs and everything else. I loved getting a glimpse into her head – especially because there were little easter eggs for those who have read the original series. This was a well rounded, heart pounding, and brilliant addition to an already amazing collection. I think I need to go reread the rest of the books now, maybe I won’t hate her as much this time around.
Overall, this is an amazing collection that only made me fall in love with the series even more. Even if you are new to the series, C.C Hunter does an amazing job of introducing things and pulling you deeply within the vortex that is the world of Shadow Falls.
