About the Author
Elvira Prieto was born and raised in California’s Central San Joaquin Valley working alongside her parents and siblings in the grape fields and fruit packing sheds of Reedley, CA and surrounding communities in Fresno County. She is the first woman in her family to attend college, receiving her B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University and an Ed.M. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Elvira’s has worked in higher education, student affairs, academic advising, policy analysis and implementation, and community-based education for over fifteen years and she is currently the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Associate Director of El Centro Chicano y Latino and Resident Fellow of Casa Naranja at Stanford University. Elvira's writing is focused on the retelling of life recuerdos (memories) with the intention of creating spaces of light, love, and healing for individuals and community.

I received the following letter from a high school student I met when I shared my book at a local youth empowerment conference at Stanford University. She invited me to visit her Boys and Girls Club and share my book and advice with her peers. I was so moved by her words that I asked permission to share in hopes that it will help others connect to my story, and she generously agreed.

"Hi Elvira,

As promised, I am writing to you because I have finished reading your book. I am overcome by a feeling of both melancholy and inspiration.

Reading your book, I was able to relate to some of your struggles, e.g., living in a home that is not financially prosperous, growing up relatively fast and having to take care of siblings, and feeling the wrath and control of a father. I come from a low-income family, and I witness the difficulties my parents face by trying to provide as much as they can for us. Growing up, I was taught how to clean the dishes, do the laundry, clean my siblings after they went potty, etc. I also cleaned after my younger brother, Gustavo, when he would throw up because of his appendicitis, and my father and his friends after drinking too much. Even though my father is not as violent as yours once was, he still thrives on the idea of dominance and control and tries to escape and forget about his problems by resorting to alcohol.

Although I can relate to quite a few of your hardships, I can also relate to some of your achievements. I pride myself in my academic success because I also have the mindset that education is my only avenue towards success and a prosperous life. I have had recognitions throughout my life for my excellence and good citizenship, and I also believe that these are steps towards achieving a post secondary education. As of now, I manage to keep a 4.0, while balancing the stress and workload of honors courses.

I am amazed by the way that you convey the naivety and innocence of a child, all the while depicting such horrendous events. I feel as if I have developed a close relationship or friendship with you through reading your book. I am saddened by tragedies that occurred in your childhood, yet I am inspired by your perseverance and strength. I loved reading your book, and I will definitely share it and recommend it to others.

I also want to say a massive thank you for visiting the youth and the BGCP. I was extremely nervous meeting you again, but that swiftly changed. You spoke from your heart and I believe that the youth left the room inspired. Once again, thank you so much Elvira, for you showcased what determination and hope can do for our people and how powerful education is. I have taught this work in multiple classes, including Chican@ lit as well as a life narratives course, because it inspires students to think more deeply about their own experiences, as well as to look outside themselves. Addressing issues of education, labor, culture, family, gender, and trauma, through eloquently crafted poetry and prose, this work resonates on a deeply emotional and personal level about critical social issues. But perhaps most importantly, this work offers an important lesson on the struggle toward healing, grace, and forgiveness.Finally, it encourages readers to think toward ancestral inheritance and memory, reminding us that our stories are linked to those of the people we love.

This is a good book for a mid-level player to expand their game.

This book makes you think more about position, and table dymamics. Good read, easy to follow concepts. Sometimes the **** of the latest edition is a little confusing because you have to go back and forth within the chapter to follow what the author wants to say.

Excellent content, sloppy print.

This book is an established value for cash games, no doubt about that, so I'm not going to discuss that any further.

However, I would like to remark that I was a bit disappointed by the look 'n feel of the book itself. The content itself looks like it has been copy-pasted from word without much adaptation to the smaller book format. The text-flow is pretty sloppy at certain places. The print itself is in black and white and cheap-feeling paper. It just doesn't look very nice when compared to other books (e.g. verneer's building a bankroll). Given the price I would surely expect something of a higher quality.

Because all of this doesn't matter in the end, it still deserves 5-stars (for the content). Just wanted to make this remark so that the author might reconsider his publisher for future books.

Elizabeth Johnston Taylor, Ph.D., R.N., has a Ph.D. in Nursing and an M.S.N. in Oncology Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as training in chaplaincy and spiritual direction. This is an invaluable tool for any nurse at the bedside. I am doing research on Spiritual Interventions in Acute Care settings at my hospital and found Taylor's suggestions and insights helpful in guiding my expectations and questions for the study.

I showed it to one of the Chaplains here and they are excited to incorporate ideas expressed in the book/guide as part of improving nurses' response to spiritual distress in patients.

This book is an excellent introduction for health care practitioners in dealing with spiritual issues common in clinical practice. Elizabeth Johnston Taylor presents the subject clearly, enhanced with quotes, cartoons and pointers towards further reading. I particularly like her exercises for readers to explore and examine their own spiritual beliefs and awarenesses, and to practice varieties of ways they can respond to patients' spiritual issues.

This book addresses the question of how to form healing verbal responses to patients' expressions of spiritual pain. Although offering healing verbal responses is a fundamental skill for health care professionals, it is not the only approach for nurturing the spirit. Being silently present, reading inspirational materials, offering prayer, and encouraging journal writing or dream analysis are examples of other approaches. (p. 5)

Thoughtful quotes help the reader consider these issues. For instance,
The compassionate man says, "I love you because I understand you." The empathizing man says, "I know how you feel." The sympathizing man says, "I feel for you." Empathy and sympathy are... devoid of healing power. They have a temporary soothing effect, but they do not heal.

I don't happen to agree with this quote, but it did give me excellent food for thought. (My own belief is that empathy is a necessary part of compassion, and that it can be very healing for people to experience empathetic listening.)

On clearing caregivers' issues, so that they can be present with the people they are helping:
Larson described these issues as "interpersonal allergies." Such allergies include the fears of: 1) our own death, 2) being hurt, 3) hurting others, and 4) being engulfed by others' problems.

While issues such as praying with patients are suggested, nowhere is there a hint of pushing the practitioners' beliefs upon the patient. On the contrary, Taylor repeatedly alerts readers maintain their neutrality and respect in dealing with patients' spiritual and religious issues.

The book comes in a version that includes a DVD with the same title, but nowhere is there mention of what is on the DVD. (I therefore gave this a pass, not knowing whether it would be of interest or worth my time.) An index would also have enhanced this useful book.

very good

I used to be a huge fan of Diana Palmer until all of her books started sounding the same. Maybe she should stop putting out so many and go for quality and different scenarios than quantity.That said, this is one of her books I still have and reread occassionally. Hunter is a half-breed indian who thinks that Jennifer is too much a "cover girl". She is in fact a top geologist whose looks have actually hindered her. She is in a male dominated field, working with Hunter (a chief of security) trying to uncover an ore that rebel countries are also looking to find and sparks fly. I recommend this DP work. Both of these characters were briefly mentioned in "His Girl Friday" or "Hoodwinked". I can't remember which.

Sweet Sparring Romance

FINAL DECISION: This is a light novel with a sparring romance between the hero and heroine. A cross-cultural romance with characters who are good people and compassionate, I enjoyed their interplay and the lack of cruel behavior by the hero.

THE STORY: Jennifer Marist is a blond geologist who works in a male field and has been separated from most men as a result. She is twenty-seven but hasn't had a serious relationship because of her career. Phillip Hunter is chief of security for Ritter Oil and is tasked with secret operations. When Jennifer's work requires her to spend a week in the desert, Hunter is sent along to protect her. Hunter is determined to not succumb to his attraction to Jennifer. As a Native American, he has sworn never to get involved with a white woman again. So his predicament is this -- keep Jennifer at a distance while protecting her.

OPINION: I really liked the connection between Hunter and Jennifer. This book was originally published as a category romance and thus is short and had restrictions on the length and content at the time it was written. Despite this, however, the sweet romance between Hunter and Jennifer shines through. I especially like how the two characters spar with one another and how Hunter has made a habit of rescuing Jennifer from the trouble she gets into. Hunter is one of the sweet Palmer heroes...compassionate and gentle rather than rude and angry.

WORTH MENTIONING: At times Palmer heroes are exceptionally cruel to the heroines because they either misunderstand the motivations of the heroine or don't appreciate her innocence. Hunter doesn't want to get involved with Jennifer, but he is much kinder toward her than might be expected in a Palmer book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HUNTER is connected with HIS GIRL FRIDAY but can be read as a standalone.

Can't put down!

This is one of my all time favorite books!It was originally published back in the 90's and I read it when it was newly published. Now I found it again, thanks to Amazon.com. I'll reread it often. Hunter is the ideal hero. An alpha male before alphas were popular. Get this book, you will not regret it.

A wake up call to all citizens.

I learned a lot from this author; things I should have known. I'm grateful that Mr. Wexford wrote this book because it makes me pay better attention to what the law-makers are doing. If we don't know what the constitution gives us, how can we stand against laws that are unconstitutional? It's my God-given responsibility to know the constitution. Because of my lack of knowledge we now have unconstitutional laws on our books. I didn't protest them because I was complacent.

The Senate is the organ that passes laws, yet in some cases, the Supreme Court voted laws into place, when it wasn't their place to do so. (Roe vs Wade was passed by the Supreme Court) The only problem I have with this book is that it's written according to the understanding of one person albeit a well informed one. It's a useful book for every citizen. We need to know these things.

Jon Wexford effectively illuminates freedom our Constitution guarantees and what life would be like without it. More than simply reiterating facts and figures, this work effectively strengthens our country by arming its reader with wisdom, knowledge and understanding of our constitution. A must read for those with any love of country.

Beginning Behavioral Research introduces students to the broad base and conceptual underpinnings of basic principles of ethical research with human participants from (a) the development of ideas and testable hypotheses, to (b) the selection of appropriate methods of measurement and data collection, to (c) the design and implementation of empirical research, to (d) the statistical analysis and interpretation of results, and finally, to (e) the reporting of findings and conclusions. The authors emphasize good research, empirical reasoning, and the continuity of psychological science in the continuing cycle of discovery and understanding.

 

The beginning in the title of this text is intended to have a double meaning. It not only describes the level of the material but also conveys the idea of a journey. For some students, the journey will be completed at the end of the course in which this text is used. For others, the journey will have just begun. In either case, students will have a deeper understanding of the applicability and limits of the scientific method.  They will also have learned how to frame questions about the scientific results they read or hear about in the media in ways that will allow them to reach beyond other people’s conclusions or assertions and decide for themselves what is true.

An Expert Look at Love, Intimacy and Personal Growth

Ralph Rosnow was my professor when I was a PhD student in the 1970's at Temple U. Most of what I learned in psychology then, now seems naive and useless. The exception is what I learned about what really is science and how research can be "scientific" and still be very wrong. I learned from Dr. Rosnow how to tell the difference between bad research and good research. Drs. Rosnow and Rosenthal saw past the smoke and mirrors, artifacts and biases, and proposed a better methodology and understanding. Recently, I had a question about my research design and analysis. I pulled "Beginning Behavior Research" off my shelf and found it valuable. it is a great book for the beginning and seasoned researcher.

A Good Introduction (7th Edition)

Rosnow & Rosenthal's BEGINNING BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH (7th Edition) is quite good. This book is aimed at undergraduate college students majoring in a behaviorally-based science (such as psychology). For a methods class, this textbook might fall a little short of the depth that most professors are looking for. While this book does a good job of explaining the absolute basics (e.g., understanding what a testable hypothesis is), it doesn't quite go far enough; the book ends with "The Analysis of Frequency Tables." This textbook seems suited for classes that try to integrate intro statistics and methods into one course.

Otherwise, the book is very readable and informative. The ending of each chapter includes nice summaries, multiple choice review questions, and discussion questions. This is esoteric material, but the authors take their time to flesh out these conceptual ideas.

If you are looking for a textbook for a Stats/Research Methods course, this might be a good book to use for the first semester. If you are looking for a purely Methods-based course, Introduction to Behavioral Research Methods (6th Edition) might be a little better suited.

OMG I can't believe I still have to read 9 more chapters of this book this semester. Great information, but horribly dry writing, and really tedious format; paragraphs ramble on for the better part of a page, mind you in what I am guessing is 8pt font...REALLY hard to read...

Maybe I'll just skim it and peruse the chapter summaries for the rest of the semester.

Super for the almost intermediate pianist

my small church suddenly needed it piano player. I ended up with the job even though I hadn't played the piano for over 20 years. I struggled with the hymns in the hymnal but eventually have gotten to where I can play most of them if I practice all week. However, I was looking for arrangements that were simple to pick up and beautiful when played in church for the offeratory. This book fit the bill. If you can play him out of the hymnal even though you might have to practice for a while, you'll be able to play these songs easily. The songs are also not as lengthy as I have seen in some books. This works well for me as it does not take very long to collect the offering. Also, if you are a more advanced player, you can easily jazz up the arrangements. I went to a music store and paid $20 for this book.

The cards are great. I do prefer this small book postcard format--it's much easier to remove cards for mailing and it's nicer if you want to keep them intact in a book as well.

However, you can get these 12 movie posters and another dozen by ordering the Classic Science Fiction Movie Posters: 24 Cards set instead--for the exact same price. The 24 set is glossier. The only downside here is the perforated edges, instead of the smooth edge in the 12 card set.

John Hoberman compellingly argues that this obsession - one shared by both blacks and whites in the media, in corporate America, and even by athletes themselves - has come to play a disastrous role in African-American life and a troubling role in our country's race relations. The sports fixation originates in the painful century-long exclusion of blacks from every other path to high achievement. The scarcity of other kinds of "race heroes" has conferred messianic status on the most popular black athletes, fostering a delusion of integration while contributing to deep social divisions. Ironically, Hoberman argues, the decline of European empires and the rise of the black athlete helped to preserve rather than undermine the inferior status of nonwhites.

Mandatory Reading on the Racial Issue

Hoberman has written a masterful account of not just racism in sport but in general, from the social, biological, cultural, political and international perspective. He makes convincing arguments that sport, rather than being the great equaliser between the races, actually has retarded black social advancement by creating an acceptable alternative to white intellectual achievement. Indeed, a plague currently afflicting black education makes any black scholastic accomplishments of the non-physical variety "white" and therefore nerdy and uncool. The imagery of Michael Jordan seduces young blacks, most of whom have no chance of ever attaining professional athletic status, into abandoning academic study for the glamor, girls and glory associated with sport. Hoberman shows how whites, who originally denigrated blacks as being lazy and shiftless, have come to regard them as athletic supermen, against which no white man would be able to legitimately compete. More insidiously, many blacks are all too willing to accept that their natural athletic genius exempts them form having to compete with whites in the intellectual sphere. The pride shown with the black athletes that have overcome white racism, such as Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali, winds up hurting the overall black goal of full social integration when it serves to be the end-all-and-be-all of the black experience in America. Hoberman also makes the point that blacks achieving wealth and fame in sport still are prisoners in a gilded cage created for the profit and entertainment of the white power structure. Without taking the same level of pride in intellectual, artistic and political prowess as with sports, blacks will continue to function on the margins of white controlled society. His observations with respect to shibboleths about racial biology and superiority are scathing indictments of the perpetuation of mythology that justifies this or that racist neurosis. Indeed, it still pervades the racial discussion, and even affects the way blacks see themselves. The invidious process of the physicalization of the black man started with slavery and continued into athletics, so that even if blacks showed superior speed or strength, they were always criticized by whites for their lack of intelligence, courage or endurance. Those lies were made manifest with the likes of Muhammad Ali, black soldiers in both world wars, African distance runners and intellectuals like DuBois, but the mindset did not change. Only until very recently have black quarterbacks in the NFL been seen as capable of doing the same job as white QBs, after years of "common" knowledge that black QBs didn't have the mental chops as whites. Sadly, it seems like sports is the only forum that blacks acknowledge they can compete with the white man. It appears only some brave black women have the courage to criticize the obsession with black prowess, which even among black intellectuals is revered and used as standards by which black achievement is measured. Charles Barkeley, he of large frame and larger mouth, is an outspoken critic of the undue emphasis that sports has in the black community, but of course we pay attention to him because he is a famous wealthy athlete, not because he is a man of letters or scientific achievement. Hoberman's book is sobering, thought provoking and only racists of either color would condemn him for his exemplary tome, that should be required reading in high schools throughout the nation. Alas, because he does skewer the black community with the painful truth, his whiteness will be used against him. Diogenes, come hither and shine your light on Hoberman. Diogenes, of course, is incapable of adjudging his color.

excellent outside perspective on the Black potential problem

Well written and excellently presented book on the problematic of Black male Americans fixated in only sports. Author presents a solid case yet puts in his own perspective on why Blacks are not excelling at anything else but sports. I havent finished it but this is a keeper.
