The Puppy and the Prince

Ok. This tale is cute & adorable. This story is cute in so many different ways, not the least of which being the adorable puppy who is a character all on his own. The human characters weren’t half bad either. Xander was priceless, walking a fine line between authoritative and attentive, secretive and mysterious. Kate’s frank openness drew me in in the complete opposite manner. I enjoy how they got to know each other over such a cute puppy. The fairy tale romance surrounding Xander & Kate just keeps growing. I love how they fit together so perfectly as individuals despite the differences in their lives. I love the mix of heat & sweetness that Steele works into this novel.

At the same time, the uniqueness of the entire tale that kept me intrigued. The intrigue and mystery surrounding parts of the tale took me for a loop, adding a plot twist that I loved. I’ll admit, there was one moment where I turned to my dog and was like: ‘Wait! What? That’s not what’s supposed to happen!’ I was so convinced I had it all figured out and our resident piece of puppy cuteness would fix everything for these characters. The plot twists were spot on for a little adventure in this steamy story.

This was an intricately plotted, well written tale and I’d definitely recommend it to others.

I was hooked from page one and only put it down when I had to.

First, I do not give spoilers. I normally don't read books that are of this nature, however, this one included a puppy as one of the main characters. I have a service dog, Shadow. So I decided to give it a chance. I'm probably going soft as I get older. Lol
Anyway, I absolutely loved the first book. So I got the set. I loved the excitement, the intriguing twists of the plot. Of course I fell in love with the puppy in the beginning. The author was very descriptive and knowledgeable about dogs, and Used great wording. I loved it. I can only hope she writes more in this series.

These stories not only contain hot romance, but a cute and cuddly puppy that will make you laugh. Can you imagine a handsome prince falling in love with you so much, he is willing to give up his thrown for you. A great series in a set so you don't have to wait to read the next book. Loved this series.

The real life mysteries that Conan Doyle investigated are fully described - the Edalji and Slater cases are the crux here - with Doyle's interest in crime demonstrated by his membership of the exclusive dining club eventually called the Crimes Club. This group discussed serious crimes and visited relevant places like the Jack the Ripper sites. A section on the development of European police forces with emphasis on the UK and attempts to establish a reliable and effective detective group really shows paral-lels to some of the Holmes canon and its emphasis on the limited nature of investiga-tions by the official police compared with Holmes's use of observation, intuition and knowledge. The centre of the picture for B. J. Rahn is the character of Conan Doyle himself. To Doyle himself she attributes the sense of justice and the investigative flair of Holmes. Professor Rahn provides background on the emergence of the Metropolitan Police, and on the techniques of the Holmesian age which were available in the investigation of violent crime. This is interesting reading in and of itself, but when applied to the Holmes stories it is doubly fascinating to note which forensic tools are referenced by Conan Doyle and which earn the merest throwaway comment. Professor Rahn demonstrates how Holmes barely touches upon the newer forensic tools of the time, relying instead on his ability to observe and then extrapolate from his observations. Perhaps this is down to the differences between writing an entertaining crime story for your readership and successfully pursuing a real-world criminal. ... a well-constructed book, brimming with fascinating historic facts and insight. Sherlock Holmes, A Most Credible Man

In 1958, Basil Rathbone was interviewed by Hollywood historian Tony Thomas. Near the end of the interview, Mr. Rathbone was asked if he thought Sherlock Holmes was a credible man. Mr. Rathbone's response was to say that he believed Holmes was an extremely credible man, adding that he thought the Holmes stories may have a timeless fascination for readers because of the wonderful characterizations Conan Doyle drew. He also noted that he would be quite nervous if the he would be seated next to Sherlock Holmes. Perhaps he would have been less nervous about meeting the real Sherlock Holmes has he had the chance to read B.J. Rahn's latest book. This new paperback edition has a new chapter, "Sherlock Holmes and the Fair Sex" and more period photographs than the 2014 hard cover edition. It is also filled with detailed information on the real life men who influenced Conan Doyle, as well as Conan Doyle's own influence on the creation of Mr. Holmes. This is an excellent way to learn why Mr. Holmes, after more than a century, is still going strong on page and on screen.

With great care and clarity, Professor Rahn traces the literary form from its origin through the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Conan Doyle and compares Sherlock Holmes' methods with those of real life detectives of the period.

But the master stroke is that, in her conclusion, by pointing out what Holmes did NOT do, Professor Rahn puts her finger on the secret of his undying fascination.

Please take the time to buy and read a copy of Sebastian Terry's 100 Things, as you will not regret it and you will be helping the amazing Camp Quality cause! Not only is the book so amazingly well written and easy to read, it is utterly captivating. The story of Sebastian Terry's 100 Things adventure will make you laugh, gasp, cry and even cringe at times, but mostly it is just so inspiring. The message that Sebastian is trying to get out there is so much deeper than 'make a list of crazy things to do' - it is about living life as the universe intended you to live it. Story after story illustrates how everything can fall into place if you have the courage to just let it happen. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to experience Sebastian Terry's amazing 100 Things journey documented in this book. She and her husband, Dr. Lawrence Silver, have five grown sons, three daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren (so far). They live with two dogs in Melissa, Texas.

An excellent resource for both teachers and parents. Debbie points out some great insight into children's educational experiences and she gives some great examples. Her writing style allows her ideas to be quite clear. It is a must read for all.

The Unbound Ministry Guidebook is an excellent follow up to Unbound. It is Biblical, pastoral, and practical. It lays a great Scriptural foundation for those both giving and receiving ministry. The material is presented in such an affirmative manner, that the reader feels confident in doing the work of the ministry. He answers some of the most commonly faced issues and also provides helpful resources in ministering to others. This is a phenomenally helpful book that I highly recommend!

Great Resource

I have had the opportunity to pray with several dozen people using Unbound prayer model over the past 4 years. I have found the 5 Keys format to be consistently fruitful in bringing people into greater freedom in Christ. The Unbound Ministry Guidebook has been an invaluable resource in my ministry. The topics, Scriptural references, and personal insights and examples from the Lozanos' years of ministry have helped me tremendously. Specifically, it has taught me much about loving the person receiving prayer and helping them to better understand their heart, which is my role in the prayer session.It is no exaggeration to say that I review some part of the Guidebook before every prayer session. The Lord always seems to reveal something new or to deepen my understanding of the Father's heart of love for me and the person with whom I pray.

Unbound Ministry

I have read Neal Lozano's previous books, and they are excelllent, but I have not yet completed this one. Will do a review when I am complete. "Unbound" is extremely clear, treats the subject factually, and like the author is well within both Catholic and orthodox Protestant Biblical theology -- lacks wild speculation and sensationalism, but treats a difficult subject, very realistically. A great read.

The English translation of the Qur’an that Thomas Jefferson purchased in 1765 made its most public appearance in 2007, when Minnesota congressman-electKeith Ellison used it for a photo-op reenactment of his taking the oath of office. Jefferson’s Qur’an is, Spellberg shows in this fresh and timely account, important not because it directly influenced Jefferson’s thought—it is not clear how much of the two-volume work he read or what he learned from it—but because its presence in Jefferson’s library reminds us of his progressive positions on religious tolerance, and the extent to which the Founding Fathers’ ideas were shaped by their ideas about Muslims, even though most of the Founders had probably never actually met a Muslim. Spellberg illustrates her thesis in part by describing the slight but significant ways in which colonial Americans came into contact with Muslims, who were thought to reflect the outer limits of a diverse American population. She scours Jefferson’s writings and draws inferences from, among other things, where in his library Jefferson shelved his Qur’an. But Jefferson’s political and diplomatic dealings, which reveal a thoughtful if complicated approach to Islam, are perhaps more revealing. Setting the Record Straight

I take issue with the previous reviewer, Shaun Kennedy, who has perpetrated erroneous charges against Spellberg's meticulous documentation, while perpetrating three factual errors of his own. If he had read the book, and there's little evidence he has, he would have seen that the pivotal quote Jefferson noted from John Locke may be found in Chapter 3, p.106, note 183. The reference is directly to the Papers of Thomas Jefferson, volume 1, p. 548. Second, to confirm that Jefferson considered Muslim civil rights, Spellberg includes an illustration of Jefferson's actual handwritten reference to Muslims from John Locke reproduced on p. 107. (The original is in the Library of Congress.) Third, Kennedy is wrong about the source of the quotation, which he says is from "The Second Treatise" instead of Spellberg's correct identification of the quotation from Locke's A Letter Concerning Toleration (1689). Spellberg's analysis of why these eighteenth-century precedents about Muslims as future citizens now matter is compelling, based on real founding precedents.

Surprising, Fascinating and Detailed

This book might also be called "The Enlightenment, America and Islam." It's a detailed exploration of how the West viewed Islam during the Enlightenment era, culminating in the Founders' views on religious liberty. While Islam remained a distant, poorly understood belief system to the Founding Fathers, they nonetheless defended rights of conscience to include such (to them) outrageously fringe belief systems as Islam. Jefferson and Adams would be disgusted by the willful ignorance and blithe bigotry of present-day politicians and talking heads, many of whom have made shockingly offensive statements denying that Muslims should enjoy the same freedoms as the rest of us (and by that, of course, they mean "Christians"). Too bad this book wasn't around when Keith Ellison was taking the oath of office on Jefferson's personal copy of the Qur'an.

America and the Muslims

We are still trying to figure out the place of Islam and of Muslims in America. We shouldn’t be going through this; the Founding Fathers considered the rules for Muslims to participate in the new government. They did so even though the Muslims they were considering were hypothetical, since there was little visible Muslim presence in the new nation. The enlightening _Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an: Islam and the Founders_ (Knopf) by historian Denise A. Spellberg shows how Jefferson and his fellows worked out how the nation would solve the knotty problems of religious toleration. It also shows that the admirable solution is still being imperfectly applied.

Jefferson and the founders knew about Islam but they didn’t know Muslims. This was partly due to uncaring blindness; many of the slaves brought from Africa were of course Muslims, but this would have made little impression on the founders. What they knew about Muslims was that they were vastly different. Many Americans, if they thought of the issue at all, suspected that Muslims were dangerous threats to America and to the Christian religion. This enabled those championing religious toleration in the new nation, like Jefferson, Madison, and Washington, to use Muslims as a bogey, a worst-case scenario, and to show that even then, there ought to be no restrictions on either their ability to practice their religion or to participate fully as citizens. Given the historic introduction Spellberg gives, Jefferson’s views were breathtakingly radical. Jefferson himself, like many of the founders, was a deist, one who saw God at work at the inception of the universe but who denied the role of miracles, and the divinity of Jesus, within it. He drew inspiration from the Bible and knew it well, but he proposed that the government had no role in the religious salvation of its citizens which he knew to be an inherently personal matter of conscience. During the ratification controversy over the US Constitution, even before the Bill of Rights was passed, the main document held a ban on any religious tests for holding federal office. The opponents against this provision fulminated that if it were included, “a Jew, Turk, or infidel” might become president. Though Spellberg’s book is mostly about acceptance of practitioners of Islam, Jefferson and the other legislators of the time were thinking also of these other religions, and about Catholics. Both those in favor of equality and inclusion and those in favor of maintaining mainstream Protestants as the only potential officeholders used Muslims as the chief example or counter-example.

Spellberg winds up her illuminating book to show that Jefferson’s enlightened view that anyone’s religious opinions should have no effect on citizenship or service has yet to be accepted by all our citizens. Jefferson, with his unorthodox religious ideas, was derided as being a Muslim himself during a vicious political campaign. President Obama has also been accused of being a Muslim (although it must be said that the accusations come from the same quarters that refuse to accept his birth certificate). The right reply to such accusations is simply, “So what?” The president, thanks to the constitutional debates over two hundred years ago, can take any religion he wants. Sarah Palin promoting her recent book denouncing the delusional “war on Christmas” says that only moral, religious people can understand or abide by the Constitution, ignoring that it is specifically written without religious qualifiers. When Congressman Keith Ellison, a Muslim, was sworn in in 2007, he did so with his hand on the very Qur’an from Jefferson’s library, which made some Christians furious. There is a requirement that there be an oath of allegiance to the Constitution, but anyone can lay a hand on any book desired while taking that oath. One columnist wrote that if you can’t take an oath on a Bible, you should not serve in Congress; other citizens phoned or e-mailed death threats. It is improbable that such people will read Spellberg’s history, but it is fun to imagine them doing so and admitting: America has no official religion, no religious requirement for its citizens, and none for its officials. Here is the amazing story of how that came to be.
