Interesting, but Lightweight

This is an interesting, but lightweight read. Benn doesn't provide notes or a bibliography, just a suggested readings list (which is excellent). For the causal reader of history or Chinese culture, this is entertaining and easy-to-read book. For the serious scholar or those wanting something more to sink their teeth into, I recommend skipping straight to the suggested readings list.

a first-rate social history of the T'ang dynasty

The subtitle of Benn's book is "everyday life in the Tang dynasty" and appropriately so. The first chapter provides a brief history of the T'ang, from its founding in 618 to its replacement by the Sui in 881. The overview is brief, but it provides context for the details that follow.

It was precisely these details that I found most intriguing, as Benn provides an ethnography of all aspects of life in medieval China from all strata of society. This includes broader themes such as urban versus rural life and the home versus public life, but also hygine, entertainment, the life cycle and beliefs and rituals around death and mourning. In many respects it read as more of an anthropological study than a history.

The detail and depth that Benn delves into is really first-rate. However, I have to give it four stars because of the lack of scholarly notation and the relative age of the secondary sources used - most of them predate the 1990s. Further on this point, while the anecdotes Benn uses to show what daily life in medieval China are excellent, I had hoped for some reference to the sources from where these stories originate.

If you are not looking for a scholarly treatment of the subject, this is an excellent resource. Recommended.

Easy, informative reading

A light, easy to read rendition of Tang history. Focuses on the everyday aspects of Tang society. The subject matter is neatly presented in chapters labeled Society; Cities and Urban Life; Clothes and Hygiene; Food and Feasts; or Leisure and Entertainment. I appreciated the book's drawings, especially of Tang hairstyles and clothing, which heavily influenced Japanese traditional clothing thereafter. Overall, a peek into Tang commoners' daily life is a refreshing change from usual history material.

Unfortunately, I have to deduct 1 star here because the author, for unknown reason, kept referring to sixth Tang emperor Xuanzong by his anglicized moniker "Illustrious August", which casts a fortune cookie feel over an otherwise enjoyable read.

The Return Of Ichigo

Ichigo returns from Hueco Mundo and confronts Aizen. The Former Captain Ichimaru interrupts them as a former soul reaper joins in on the fight. It is a good read and there are only two more volumes left after this in the very long Arrancar Arc of Bleach. Any fan of the manga or anime will enjoy this.

All of this ATTACK-MISS, ATTACK-HEAL, ATTACK-OOPS, IT'S JUST AN ILLUSION stuff is starting to annoy me.

Yamamoto uses a forbidden technique that can only be used by sacrificing the users body, but unfortunately Aizen only gets singed a little. But Yamamoto's sacrifice left an opening for Ichigo to launch another surprise attack. Finally Aizen receives a wound! The only problem is that the Hogyoku healed him.

This arc seems like it's going to go on forever. Would someone just kill Aizen already so the story can progress? All of this ATTACK-MISS, ATTACK-HEAL, ATTACK-OOPS, IT'S JUST AN ILLUSION stuff is starting to annoy me.

"Ichigo Kurosaki...All of your battles took place in the palm of my hand."

Apparently, Aizen was behind everything that happened to Ichigo since he met Rukia and became a Soul Reaper. Aizen was sure that Ichigo would be the best subject for his research. There is one little mistake in the dialogue when Aizen says that Ichigo had never seen a Hollow until the night he met Rukia. That isn't true. Ichigo saw the Hollow that killed his mother when he was younger.

"I've known you from the moment you were born. You were born special. Because you are human and..."

And then Ichigo's dad appears in all his Soul Reaper glory. Ichigo is half-human and half-Soul Reaper. We already knew that, but this is Ichigo's first time hearing (and seeing) about it. He's surprised at first, but he takes the news pretty maturely and tells his dad that he won't ask questions and he'll wait until his dad is ready to tell him about it.

Ichigo finally has his battle with Gin Ichimaru, while his dad attacks Aizen. Gin is one of those characters that always has his eyes closed, but you know that when they open, he's completely serious about what he's saying or doing. As they fight, Gin comes to the realization that Ichigo is going to become even stronger than he is now.

"The Hogyoku's true power is the ability to read the hearts of those around it and realize their deepest desires."

The Hogyoku is pretty much the reason for Rukia losing her powers, and Chad and Orihime gaining their special powers. The Hollowfying of Shinji Hirako and the others was an experiment to verify the powers of the Hogyoku. With his suspicions confirmed, Aizen sent Rukia to Ichigo. It's kind of scary how much power to Hogyoku has, and something that powerful in Aizen's hands really isn't good--especially since he's fused with it.

Urahara makes his entrance using a bunch of fancy Bakudo, Kido, and Hado, but they don't really seem to have done much of anything to Aizen. He didn't come alone, though. As Urahara and Isshin (Ichigo's dad) restrain Aizen--in his new creepy form--Yoruichi attacks from above. It's getting really old seeing all these different people attacking Aizen and barely leaving a scratch.

As Ichigo watches Urahara, Isshin, and Yoruichi fight Aizen, he begins to lose hope. With lost hope comes lost strength. If Ichigo wants to protect his friends, his family, and his town from Aizen, he'll need to regain the hope that they'll defeat Aizen and make it out alive.

I love love love Bleach! This manga is amazing and will thought out. Tite Kubo dose a great job telling the story and the illustration is out of this world! If you are all about the supper natural or even if you just like sword fights, then check this manga out!

About the Author
Justinian Jampol is Founder and Executive Director of the Wende Museum. His work focuses on visual cultural studies and the connection between contemporary art and Cold War iconography. Jampol studied at UCLA before earning his doctoral degree in Modern History from Oxford University. The curator of several exhibitions, Jampol has also produced two documentary films on the Cold War, as well as urban art programs including The Wall Project. His writing and work has been featured in The Atlantic, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and The New York Times.

Exquisite!

This book is absolutely a *treasure*! The extensive and gorgeous collection of pictures plus the write-up are absolutely *superb*. As an aside, I spent a lot of time in (then-East) Germany - and most of eastern Europe - during the Cold War era, and I've returned many times post-1989. This book therefore has particular significance and meaning for me, but I'm certain anyone who's interested in this topic and who loves an extensive/beautiful collection such as that shown in this book would be enthralled. The book is very heavy, but that means it's filled to the brim with treasures.

This is an absolutely amazing chronicle of life in the German Democratic Republic

This is an absolutely amazing chronicle of life in the German Democratic Republic, from its establishment in 1949 up through the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and subsequent reunification of the two Germanys. LIfe in East Germany is completely and accurately summarized and represented: everything from menus in restaurants, to shopping, transportation, education, home life, the State Security Service (Stasi), etc. Even what was available to drink and smoke is described and illustrated. It's as if the Wende Museum - the book's publisher - has take the entire collection of its East German and Cold War archives and put it into a coffee table book. But be careful, you'll need a strong coffee table: this publication weighs over eleven pounds. If you're interested in German history, particularly of the Cold War years, this book is a must.

GDR: THE BIG BOOK OF A COUNTRY

A quite remarkable book using 2500 images to reveal daily life in East Germany. The collection is from the Wende Museum in Los Angeles, established in 2002 to study visual and material culture in the country (what is in these pages is about one percent of the museum's collection). You might think how can a book sum up something as complex as a modern Nation. Fortunately the east part of the divided Germany only existed from 1949 to 1990 and I thought the book gave a very credible look back to these years. The eight chapters cover it all: Eat, drink and smoke; Home; Design and fashion; Entertainment and recreation; Travel and transportation; Labor and education; Political life (with 269 pages the longest section) Iconoclasm and counterculture.

Because the East was right next door to the West it developed a lifestyle for its citizens far better than other socialist bloc countries and certainly better than the USSR. The countries leaders convinced themselves that their Germany would eventually overtake the western part and just looking at the range of consumer products in the first four chapters it's easy to see how they fooled themselves. The chapters on Labor and Political life reveal why it all came unstuck: the inflexible central planning; a non-convertible currency; regular shortages; the ever present and pervasive state security departments (brilliantly summed up in the 2006 movie 'The lives of others').

Taschen have done their usual excellent job with this look behind the wall. A big heavy book, which comes in a carrying case, first class design, paper and printing. There is an additional sixty page book (9.5 by 8 inches) included, a pensioner's scrapbook from 1966 showing their travels around the resorts of East Germany (worth checking that it's included if you buy a non-new copy of the book).

Fingerstyle notation at its finest

I ordered this book to learn some tunes people would be familiar with at various events I play in. Having played mostly classical my whole life, I have ventured into fingerstyle acoustic guitar, and this book is a great gateway into all the fun to be had! Ben Woolman's transcriptions are brilliant, and precise. There are pieces for the intermediate player such as the "Theme From Schindler's List," and "Hedwig's Theme," while, a more advanced player might venture into "Theme From Superman." The book contains sheet music, tablature, and left hand fingerings. These pieces are a must have for any gigging musician. You and your audience will be pleased with these pieces.
