East meets West in the Heavenly Realms

Energy masters Chia and Wei have kicked astrology up a notch. They have pulled together five different systems of astrology -- some eastern, some western -- to give us the most complete description of the energy pattern that existed at our birth. The five systems are: the twelve Chinese animal signs, the twelve Western astrology signs, the Western Sun and Moon Sign combinations, the Chinese animal and Western sign combinations, and the Birth Personality and Destiny Cards. Each system is described in detail and charts are provided so that we can each find the specific sign or combination that applies to us. This is the first time I've come across the Birth Cards system. It turns out that it is centuries old, and I must admit the description associated with my card resonated rather dramatically with me.

Can not put this book down!

This is one of those books you need to grab a few friends and just hand it around checking everyone's signs. It has EVERYTHING in it....charts for moon signs, sun signs, birth card signs, zodiac signs, etc. I just keep wanting to check out everyone's descriptions, from my kids to my coworkers and friends, even my favorite artists and celebrities. I highly recommend this for anyone who is into astrology!

Rubenesque Rapture by Rose Wynters (The Endurers #1)

Rubenesque Rapture is a sex charged tale about a woman named Anna. Anna has been plagued by demons for as long as she can remember. Demons killed her mother and they abducted her. Now they are back and they want her to breed a new army of demons. Anna is determined not to let that happen. Enter Shayne. He is an immortal warrior and he has been sent to rescue Anna and protect her from the demons that want her so desperately. What neither of them expect is the instant attraction that flares between them. Shayne is determined to make Anna his. Can he convince her that not all men are scumbags, and that he would protect her and cherish her forever?

Rose Wynters has written a story that ensnares the reader from the very first page. Anna is a character that the reader will grow to love. She is insecure and self-conscious of her body, but Shayne shows her that her curves are sexy an alluring. The primal connection that exists between Anna and Shayne is so hot, that the reader is surrounded by the heat. Anna and Shayne are on a race to save the world and their love. This is an unbelievable to start to a fascinating new series.

the heroine is actually rubenesque

Ok people, the heroine is actually rubenesque and not the size 10 or 12 maybe a 14 we commonly read about when authors go curvy. I refer to them as the fashion world definition of plus size (FWD). This heroine was a size 24 which was extremely refreshing. Anna Andrews is special and she does not begin to find out just how much until after she meets Enforcer Shayne McLoughlin. There was a lot of action in the story and some lag when the two were getting to know each other once they arrived at Shayne's home. We are basically in a world where Demons want to take over earth led by the, yes THE fallen angel who rules Hell, Anna will play a big part according to the leader of the enforcers which might happen later on in the series just not in this book. The plot is interesting and there are some wonderful places this series can go. Religion is mentioned in Rubenesque Rapture as part of the world, for instance sacred ground and crosses causing demons physical pain but it was all safe stuff nothing to be offended by. This was a good read. Some of you may find this book reminds you or at least the premise reminds you of a popular series but I won't say who. Bottom line I would read book two.

Hot, hot, hot!

This was my first foray into the BBW, or Rubenesque, genre. I have to say that I did like the concept, and I can certainly appreciate a fuller figured woman being the main character and the love interest of a gorgeous warrior. However, I felt like I was constantly being beat over the head about Anna's size. I only need to be told once that she is a size 24, curvaceous and plump, beauty. I don't need to be reminded of that every time I turn a page. I felt like it should have been a subtle enhancement to the story, not the albatross around its neck.

I was also very intrigued by the Endurer world. It started off fast and furious, introducing us to the immortal Endurer warriors who protect humankind from hell-sent demons. In the story, the world is on the edge of Armageddon, and Lucifer is preparing to send his demon army en masse into the world to wreak havoc and steal souls. But, the demons, and Lucifer, are determined to kidnap Anna and use her for breeding purposes. For some reason they are convinced that if they can get one of their evil puppets to impregnate her, she will give birth to the Antichrist. This was one of the story elements that was not really explained adequately. I never did really grasp why they believed that she was the one human female that could fulfill this desire. What made her so special? Since this is Book One in Rose Wynters' Endurers series, I expected (and needed) quite a bit more exposition to really bring the world to life for me. I felt like the whole time I was reading the book that I had jumped into an established series at around book two or three, and had missed some important details. And with this book being over 450 pages on my e-reader, there was certainly enough time to explain!

I was drawn in by the instant chemistry between Shayne and Anna, and while the sex scenes and dirty talk were hot (graphically, blush-inducing, hot!), it seemed a little forced. Instead of letting their attraction and lust develop naturally, it was rushed and jumped into way before I really believed it. I quickly got on board, but by the time I was ready to embrace their lustful romps, they were proclaiming their undying love for each other. It definitely helped move the story along, but it could have been that much better if it had been allowed to breathe a little bit.

Overall, I did really like this book. The characters were vivid and likeable, and I can really see myself getting drawn into this world and the coming battle between good and evil. Plus, Wynters did a really good job introducing enough secondary characters that she could carry this series on with several really interesting sequels. I will definitely pick up book number two when it is available!

Excellent history, underwhelming recipes/branding.

This book has some positive things going for it, from a very interesting and thorough history of vermouth to a beautiful layout and gorgeous photography. It's very nice to see this ingredient mulled over in-depth, and there are some very intriguing facts about the decline of vermouth in the US following WWII that I have not seen discussed elsewhere.

That being said, I am fairly disappointed with the blatant branding and focus on NY regional products that runs throughout the second half of the book. I get it, the author invested his time and energy into the Atsby vermouth line and loves the NY area, but this reads more like a list of sponsored recipes for his company/colleagues that you would find in promotional PR material or a paid ad than an honest look at the broad spectrum of vermouth cocktails. That's not to say that they have no place in a cocktail book, especially since the Atsby products are not necessarily interchangeable with other styles, but the sheer amount of times they are called for is overwhelming.

Overall, I'd rate this purchase as 2.5 stars. It is a mixed bag that has some great highlights, but I feel is ultimately a missed opportunity when it comes to providing an impartial take on vermouth, and I probably would not purchase it again.

Perfect for Boozehounds and History Buffs alike!

Adam Ford has crafted a solidly informative, interesting, and entertaining look into the history of a beverage much maligned in recent cocktail culture. From the book's very introduction, Ford puts the reader at ease and lets everyone know--loud and clear--that although vermouth may have a reputation as your grandmother's drink, sitting under a fine layer of dust in the back of an aging liquor cabinet, the history of the drink is both vibrant, multi-faceted, and will be told by Ford in a way that makes it approachable. I often found myself chuckling at Ford's quips and comments throughout the book. His writing style make it feel like you're sitting next to him at your local watering hole and easily guides the reader through the ancient history, modern American history, and even cocktail recipes in way that is seamless and seemingly effortless. While the read was easy, the information was dense and textured, and structured in a way that build logically and left me both satisfied and thirsty for more after finishing the book. Much like Heather Greene's "Whiskey, Distilled" and Robert Simonsson's history of the Old Fashioned cocktail, Vermouth crafts both a history and a set of approachable modern applications of a drink that takes the reader on an interconnected journey throughout human history as well as through modern culture. I didn't feel as if I only walked away with knowledge of vermouth, but of the cultures within which it has existed for centuries. Also worth mentioning is the absolutely stunning photography peppered throughout-If you doubt the vermouth can be sexy, the visuals alone here will prove you wrong!

Vermouth is perfectly timed to the modern resurgence of vermouth in cocktails around the country and deserves a spot on the bookshelf of any cocktail enthusiast, cultural historian, American history buff, or simply anyone who enjoys a good read over a stiff drink.

I initially got the book for a friend of mine who is way into vermouth and books (I’m not), but ended up keeping it for myself. Right from the start, the author did a great job of drawing me in to what I previously thought was a very un-sexy world of vermouth. First, the book is beautiful -- he obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the aesthetics – cover to cover with gorgeous photos throughout. Then he writes so passionately about his journey with vermouth, how he fell in love, and it kind of makes you want to love it too. It may be a little heavy on vermouth history for my taste, but if you’re interested in that sort of thing, he begins with vermouth in China thousands of years ago and brings you up to date. And for the drink lover/vermouth novice like myself, there are a ton of really interesting cocktail recipes that look delicious! I also found out the author created his own brand of vermouth. Now that’s serious! But if he put the same love and care into creating his vermouth as he did with his book about it, it’s probably worth more than a try.

This book is really just a rehash of other productivity improvement books out on the market. But, I really enjoy how Brain Tracy writes. He has a very approachable style. I have been a big fan of his for many years. In any event, I enjoyed reading Master Your Own Time Master Your Own Life. It will certainly be a welcome addition to my library.
