The book also investigates specific developmental issues emerging during conflict management and post conflict reconstruction. Both authors have a background in conducting research in deeply divided societies, and argue that many of the processes connected with war and peace making deliberately write people out of the equation. This book attempts to ‘write people in’.

By drawing on contemporary theoretical debates and examining current policies and events, the text unpacks the difficult and complex aspects of the relationships between armed conflict and development and makes them accessible, interesting and policy relevant. It considers how peace making, peace building, and post-war reconstruction are usually more sustainable and successful if politicians, policy makers, entrepreneurs and those working for international NGOs take on board local opinion and capacity. Written in an accessible style, the book considers the main contemporary theories and arguments on conflict, development and the interactions between the two. The text is illuminated throughout with case studies drawn from Africa, the Balkans, Asia and the Middle East.

About the Author

Andrew Williams is Professor of International Relations, University of St Andrews. He specialises in the study of conflict and international history. His main research interests include international conflict resolution, international history and international organisation. He has had a great deal of experience of the practice of conflict resolution and has worked as a consultant for United Nations organisations such as UNDP and UNITAR. He has published widely in key journals. His book Liberalism and War was published by Routledge in 2005.

Roger Mac Ginty is a Reader at the School of International Relations, University of St Andrews. He specialises in the study of peace, conflict and conflict management. His publications include No War, No Peace: The rejuvenation of stalled peace processes and peace accords.

This book is an amazing introduction to the thematic and gives a strong understanding of actual issues between conflict and development. The points that Williams and MacGinty make through the book are crucial to get a clear view of the actual Post-2015 Agenda negotiations and the importance of the Goal 16 on peaceful and inclusive society. The international cooperation and the development community have neglected for too long the importance of conflicts' effects.

Ok,

Another book for a class taught at Arizona State University, whose main goal is to state obvious concepts while aggressively promoting a far left agenda. The author wants us to apologize for America and admit the world's woes are western based and that the USA has a starring role in this theatrical version of world events. The fact this rag is passed off as intellectual content at a publicly funded STATE University is an insult to every tax payer proud to be an American. If it wasn't for America just imagine how the world would be, would you want to live in it. If you know your history then you know the right answer.

In short, get an education by avoiding this rag; get an education despite what you're force fed by people in the ivory tower of academia who know as much about the real world, past, present, and future, as a child that never leaves home.

Wonderful! A Big Help Right Out of the Gate!

I am in Outbound Telesales. Mr. Schiffman knows what he is talking about-I could feel it in my heart that the things he said were true! after I finished the book, I took the list from the back of the book and I now read it before I start taking calls (autodialer). Actually, I Have several of his books, I highly recommend "Cold calling Techniques that Really Work"
One book is how to think about it(mindset) and the other is a playbook!(just do it!) Thank you Mr. Schiffman, Almost overnight I had a more relaxed positive attitude, my sales and commissions have doubled and people are asking ME for advice!

A true inspirational role model!

A true inspirational and motivational book. Once I began reading, I found it difficult to put down. A true tribute to how determination, dedication, love, support and a positive attitude can help anyone achieve whatever dreams they desire. Derek Jeter's journey from a childhood dream to the steps and scarifices he took in accomplishing his goal is a life lesson for anyone, whether you're 9 or 99. An intimate look at his family, his thoughts, his fears, his struggles, his triumphs...I found myself laughing, crying and reflecting on my own life as I related his experiences to my own. This book teaches you about Derek Jeter, but mostly, it teaches you about life. A+++++

Add a Star If You Are Under 18

Derek Jeter is the superstar shortstop for the most well known sports franchise in the world and he reminds us of this on almost every other page. For some reason this does not come across as conceit. Jeter is a truly likeable individual and I think it is great that he has written a book that can serve as an inspiration for teens and young adults. So many of the sports stars out there today are horrific role models for today's youth. Jeter stands on his own as a respectful athlete who has not squandered his immense talent. That being said, while this book is a must read for any sports fan under the age of eighteen I do not believe that adults will feel the same way. I am a Yankee fan so I was able to find enjoyment from Jeter's stories about the great championship seasons of recent years. However, others will probably find the story telling a little too simplistic. If you are looking for a tell all book about his relationship with Maria Carey you will not find it here. If you are looking for a great gift to give to a young aspiring sports fan, this book is perfect.

Best book you can buy.

This book is incredible. I bought it 2 years ago thinking it was just about baseball, but it was much more then that. He talks about achieving your dreams. As a kid little Derek Jeter wanted to play Shortstop for the New York Yankees. Look where he is now. Short Stop for the Yankees. This dream wasn't just handed to him. He had to overcome a lot of challenges he dealt them in different ways. His parents where very supportive of anything he and his sister wanted. They deal a big part of his success.

This book was very useful to me. When I read it back in 8th grade I didn't want to put it down. SSR became my favorite part of the day so I could read it. I don't know how it happened, but the book was so inspiring. As I read it I would think, "Hey if Derek can do it so can I." Being in Special Ed. I thought, "I'm not as smart as other people so why bother." After reading it I began to focus on my grades a lot more. I did all my homework and suddenly I had all these good grades. In the middle of the year I got moved up to regular classes and at the end of the year I was moved out of Special Ed. I now think anyone in Special Ed. can do well they just have to work hard and focus on school.

I'm now in 10th grade and I'm working hard to graduate and get into college teachers have asked me what encouraged me and I always say, "Derek Jeter." For some teachers that I have loved I bought them a copy of this book and they loved it. Because of this masterpiece book my whole future has been changed. I now know what I want in life. There have been so many wonderful things that have happened to me just because I focus in school and I owe it all to Derek Jeter.
