Useful and Needed Reference

The concept of "Software Debt" seems simple enough. Until you think about it. And then you realize that there are different kinds of debt. And that you need to understand and assess each so that you can make sensible choices about how want to make choices regarding your debt moving forward. Fortunately, Chris's Agile-friendly discussion of debt gives you a solid and useful foundation so that you can make better choices regarding your own software debt.

I have recently read the book "Managing Software Debt" by Chris Sterling and must say I am quite impressed. The author does a fantastic job explaining the subject and provides a lot of guidance on how to deal with the issue. If you want to talk about ROI, this book is so packed with ideas and inspiration, it should cost thousands. The author maintains an open mind throughout the book, and by reading this, you do too.

The author addresses software debt at many levels, more than I knew existed. This book is part of the Agile Software Development Series, but I think this is a core book everyone involved in a software project should read (chickens and pigs). I am surprised to see so few books on the topic, but this book is so well put together, I don't know if other books are needed.

Buy it, read it, follow it.

Software debt and technical debt explained clearly in laymans terms.

This book should be mandatory reading for anyone who manages a team of software developers. The same goes for project managers over software development as well. After being in the industry for almost 7 years now, I've seen many of the same mistakes made that this book warns against, and the real costs involved. I have seen software projects bogged down in the same ways that this book describes. I was startled at how accurate the book predicted the root causes of software debt, and the outcomes when software debt problems are ignored.

From a superficial level, I found this book easy to read, and simple to understand. The book is intended for anyone in the software industry, though managers will definitely get more out of it. Despite the textbook look and feel, it's not overly technical. My only complaint is that I wish it were more affordable. If it were, I'd buy a copy for my boss... and his boss too!

About the Author
James Trefil has authored or coauthored numerous books on science for the general audience. His interest in scientific literacy began with a contributed essay to E. D. Hirsch’s Cultural Literacy and continued with his work on the Content Review Board for the National Science Education Standards. He serves as a regular contributor and science consultant for Smithsonian magazine and as a science commentator on National Public Radio. He received undergraduate degrees from the University of Illinois and Oxford University. After receiving a doctorate in theoretical physics from Stanford University, he held post-doctorate and faculty appointments in Europe and the United States. James Trefil is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. He has made contributions to research in elementary particle physics, fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and the earth sciences. Trefil was recently awarded the prestigious Gemant Prize of the American Institute of Physics for his efforts to present science to the public.

Robert M. Hazen is the Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University and Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Geophysical Laboratory. Hazen developed a fascination for rocks and minerals as a child growing up in mineral-rich Northern New Jersey, and he pursued that interest as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After receiving a doctorate in earth sciences from Harvard University, he spent a year at Cambridge University as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow. In addition to teaching courses on scientific literacy, scientific ethics, symmetry in art and sciences, and visual thinking, he performs research on materials at high pressure. His current studies on the origin of life explore the hypothesis that life arose in a deep, high –pressure environment. Hazen is active in presenting science to the public. He developed a 60-lecture video version of this textbook, Great principles of Science, which is available nationally through The Teaching Company. He has appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including NOVA and Today. His most recent popular book is The Diamond Makers, which recounts the discovery of a method to make synthetic diamonds. Robert Hazen is also a part-time professional trumpeter.

Becoming Scientifically Literate in Today's World

I am reading the book in conjunction with The Teaching Company's "The Joy of Science," which is presented by the Professor Hazen. The purpose of both is give you a background in the sciences-Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Biology-to make you scientifically literate for today's technical world. This sounds impossible because of the scope of the task. However through clear writing, examples found in the everyday world and excllent illustrations they achieve their goal.

The book is geared for a nontechnical person. It is not designed to prepare someone to be a scientist or engineer. Thus the authors keep the mathematics to a minimum. The book is very readable. As a result of the book I now understand the basics of relativity and genetics. Both are areas I had trouble before.

All the pages were there but I at least expected the book to look presentable. It is torn from the side & it seems like the cover will come off soon. Some parts of the cover are also missing and the book looks very unwell-taken cared of.

About the Author
Ralph Brody, Ph.D. passed away on February 8, 2006. Dr. Brody was previously on the faculty of Cleveland State University where he taught social policy and human service administration. He also taught graduate courses on human service delivery models at Case Western Reserve University. Previously, he served for fifteen years as the executive director of the Federation for Community Planning, an organization that provides research, planning and advocacy on health and human services. Dr. Brody authored books on case management, the state legislative process, fundraising events, community problem solving, service learning, and macro practice. Dr. Brody’s many years as a manager and teacher convinced him that the issues facing those in human service organizations were universal and applied to boards of directors as well as NGOs. He dedicated himself to developing tools to enhance the understanding and skills of those in leadership roles, from Cleveland to India, Spain, Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt and Nigeria. His frequent workshops in Kenya led to the translation of his casebook into the Swahili language. His co-authored book with Dr. Nair: Grassroot Development – Establishing Successful Microenterprises has been published in English and Malayalam language. Dr. Brody’s work touched millions, and his contributions will continue to educate, inform and inspire future students and professionals in human services field.

Murali D. Nair, Ph.D., Senior Fulbright Scholar is a Clinical Professor and Co-Chair of Community Organization/Planning/Administration Concentration (COPA) at the University of Southern California School of Social Work. Prior to that Murali was a professor at Cleveland State University for 20 years, which included serving as the co-director of the Center for Healing Across Cultures and director of the School of Social Work. From there, he received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching, the Distinguished Faculty Award for Service, and the Multicultural Leadership Award. Columbia University, where Murali received his doctorate, recently inducted him into the institution’s School of Social Work hall of fame for his exemplary leadership in social work education and his exceptional professional achievements. Murali has co-authored four books with Ralph Brody, including Community Development; Grassroot Development: Establishing Successful Microenterprises, Service Learning (3rd edition); and Macro Practice: A Generalist Approach (9th edition).

Great for students and future leaders.

Though many would argue that the information in this textbook is common sense, there's no better way to solidify the art of management with a guide. The information provided in the text is solid, a bit lengthy (which is to elaborate, which is nice), and gets into the deep mechanics of being culturally sensitive to your clients, employee health (in context to respect and their relationships with one another), and successfully creating, implementing, and running a human service organization.

Incredibly dull reading that was required for graduate work. Useful information can be mined out especially thanks to the handy lists and italicized words found in text that draws attention to pertinent information, but everything else can be skipped over.

About the Author
Larry Roberts is currently teaching parasitology and marine biology at the University of Miami. He received his Ph.D. in Parasitology from Johns Hopkins University and is a coauthor of Foundations of Parasitology, 5/e. Past teaching affiliations include University of Massachusetts, Texas Tech University, and Florida International University. Dr. Roberts has authored numerous research articles and a title of related interest: Underwater World of Sport Diving.

Boring, black and white!

This would have easily had a five star rating had there been color within the book! All photos and diagrams are black and white, making it hard to grasp!

The BEST textbook I have purchased in a long time!

The authors did a great job compiling all the complex and overwhelming information into a nice, concise and well-organized book. I chose to purchase the black and white copy, because it is cheaper, but I'm sure the color copy is even better than mine; which means a lot to me because I love my book entirely!
The sections are distinct, the main ideas and concepts of every chapter are very straight-forward and the pictures used have been wisely chosen to represent the information given in the best detail possible.
The writing technique is also impressive- the text does include A LOT of information, but it is not boring, nor does it seem to be mind-boggling. The authors did a great job stating the information clearly so as to enhance the reader's understanding and knowledge, without being wordy or confusing.

To compare, I have searched for other parasitology reference materials before, and I have purchased a few of them. The problem I kept facing was that there seemed to always be a lack of information given. For example, one of my references presented some parasites, what they looked like, their life cycles and their pathogenesis. But it did not explain the biophysiological characteristics of each parasite. Others I've had focused more on pathogenesis and prevalence, and did not detail life cycles, larva stages, etc.

Even though this book does not include information on every single parasite, it does provide the best foundation possible for understanding these organisms. And that's the most important part, because in this technology age we live in, we don't need to memorize every single piece of data- we can just google it- but what you do need is the "how" and "why". As long as you have a solid foundation, anything you come across will make sense. This book includes anatomy and physiology, life cycles, descriptions of each life cycle stage, it details the categories, classes, orders and families of parasites and uses specific examples of species within those classifications to illustrate the concepts, and the information is presented accurately and thoughtfully.

So, all in all this is truely 5 star material.

Disappointed in the lack of parasite images

I'm kind of disappointed in this book. I was excited to see lots of pictures of parasites, parasite diseases, and the like. This book has very few pictures, most of which don't bring much more to the table than the text itself, and to make it worse...most are in black and white.

About the Author
A native of Washington, D.C., Cathy Sultan and her family survived the wars in Lebanon from the mid-seventies to the early eighties. The experience left her with a mind-broadening education about the realities of Middle East politics, which she hauntingly depicts in her 2005 memoir A Beirut Heart: One Woman’s War. and in her recounting of the 2006 Israeli-Hezbollah war in Tragedy in South Lebanon. Her first novel, The Syrian, a political thriller, was published in 2014. She continues to study the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and in so doing hopes, through her writing and activism, to help forge peace in the region. Sultan currently sits on the Board of Directors of Interfaith Peace Builders. She lives in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with her husband.

An excellent primer on the Arab-Israeli conflict and why we should care.

This is a good primer. It's worth reading just to have a handle on the sequence of events in the Middle East. The author has footnotes galore, and seems to have painstakingly tried to verify her sources. When she couldn't verify a claim, she states such.

I believe individuals make change. Ms. Sultan is trying to make change by showing how intractable the problem is.

It's a very quick read.

Fast-Paced and Compelling!

Standing in the shoes of those who face each other daily across this dangerous divide forces us to see beyond media stereotypes often reduced to terrorist and victim. The fast-paced narrative and compelling interviews brings to life a conflict whose complexities Americans must try to understand.

Stop the horror!

Incredible, unbelievable the horror in which these two peoples live. It is nonsence that the otherwise smart Israeli population doesn't put an end to the stupidity of their leaders, doesn't force them to create the two states, securing peaceful coexistence.
