Lucia Mors took her first steps at Vivienne Westwood s Studio. Since then, she has earned a degree in fashion design at the Meisterschule für Mode, Munich, and added to her resume with two shoe collections for the Selve brand, while gathering experience as head of the pattern-design department of the Misericordia fair-trade company in Peru. Currently, she is continuing her studies at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, determined to give fashion a true element of social conscience.

Not so basic but a GREAT value anyway

In preparation to write a more comprehensive review of this text for my site, I came to Amazon to see what others had said -but alas, no one had. How odd.

Context: I've been making patterns in the industry for nearly 3 decades, I'm also an author, run the most popular site on the internet for people who want to start a clothing line and do a lot of training in production pattern making. Because I collect pattern making books, I had to get this one. To be sure, I was put off by the low price (I admit to equating value with price) but figured $10 wasn't much of a risk with free shipping.

I have to tell you, this is not a bad buy, why are people selling used copies? I should qualify that. You should not expect to be able to cut whatever style strikes your fancy after using this book, it will not do that. I also wouldn't describe it as "Basic". Some of the styles within are quite complex and would be challenging for beginners but fun for intermediate pattern makers or those with a knack for it willing to exercise a bit of perseverance.

The value for beginners is drafting a fitting shell. For kindred with more experience, it has the *only* instruction I've seen in *modern* books on how to draft a sleeve appropriate to the range of motion. Most pattern books show the front and back of the sleeve as being close to mirror images. This one isn't like that. The back side of the sleeve cap is longer and more gently sloped. The front is curvier, cupping at the armscye. In my biased but qualified opinion, I think the sleeve drafting portion alone justifies the cost of the book.

Downsides: Altho it is a plus that the text is in English, French and German, some of the translations are puzzling. For example, I know well what "collar" means. What I don't understand is how "collar" is used as a given point of measure within the text. I haven't actually done any of the drafts to know (at which point it would become apparent) but the definition of collar isn't something one should be puzzled about.

Readability: a bit more care would improve readability, say, indenting the beginning of paragraphs. In places the text seems dense (the proverbial wall of text) but that may not bother you. Another issue is font size within the drafts themselves. If you're an old fart like me, you'll need reading glasses.

Pluses: While a paperback book, the binding is stitched rather than perfect bound. This means you can weight it open and the binding won't break. I love the paper quality, it feels rich. Thick and dense enough that you don't get ghosted impressions from opposing pages. It also has a dust cover. This was not a cheap print job.

My fear is that this book hasn't sold well and will go out of print. Perhaps worse, the publisher won't consider it cost effective to print other titles similar to it. That would be a big shame. I would very much like to see this author and publisher to put out more books like this.

Note: I don't know anything about this author so I can't speak to where this comes from but it is obvious to me that the drafting style is German. That my friends is a very good thing. I don't know if the author was trained in Germany or learned from a German instructor or even whether the illustration style and organization originated with the German publisher but like I said, it's a good thing. Of all the pattern texts, the German books are the most expensive and by a lot. With the exchange rate and shipping, a German drafting book can set you back $300. Even I don't have one (beyond WW2 and earlier) and that's saying something.

Germans have zero style reputation but their pattern engineering skills are arguably the best in the world. Yes, better than French and Italian. It would be a pity if this German publisher were compelled to cease investing in books for the English speaking market because this book didn't sell.

Very Sound Guide to Pattern Making, however...

A quick note: The book is beautifully photographed and is much more streamlined than many other pattern making books.
Read directions carefully, and realize that where it says "cut" the instructions may be indicating "draw". The illustrations are helpful, making it easier to understand what the translations are indicating. Such a nice book. For the next edition a native English speaker familiar with pattern making [there are many of us!] ought to be a proof-reader. Unlike Armstrong or other pattern making books which attempt to be an encyclopedia of drafting techniques, "Basic Patternmaking in Fashion" provides a step-by-step explanation of pattern drafting for the garments illustrated and photographed in the text.

Great Book!

I love this book so much. It tells you the regions of the body needed to make accurate patterns, and it includes some basic projects to help you get a feel for what you are doing. As a beginner, I found that the book provided me with information that I would otherwise not know. This book is a great addition to my library of books. If looking for a book that clearly states ways of measuring someone (including pictures) and pattern making "short hand" and the things they stand for, then this is the book for you!

Preface

This volume was initially developed while the senior author was teaching prosthetics and orthotics to entry-level physical therapy students over a period of many years. During that time our students and others asked repeatedly for a single resource around which they could focus their learning. This book is our response to their prodding.

Although developed primarily for physical therapy students, this book should be useful for many with limited experience or background in prosthetics and orthotics. It should be appropriate for other health care professionals including nurses, physicians, occupational therapists, vocational counselors, and more recently, managed care providers. The text assumes only a basic understanding of anatomy, kinesiology, and to some extent, pathology.

The primary objective of this volume is to provide a sound overview of the principles underlying the art and science of prosthetics and orthotics as currently practiced in the United States. We fully recognize that there are distinct regional differences and preferences in prostethics and orthotics (P&O) practice throughout this country and others. The reader should know that he or she may never encounter some of the devices described in this text and is very likely to encounter devices, which vary significantly, or even drastically, from those presented herein. This book is not intended as an encyclopedic treatise of every possible P&O device. Such a work, if possible, would be overwhelming in size and outdated before it appeared in print. Rather, our intention is to address the fundamental concepts underlying the rational selection and application of common prosthetic and orthotic devices. Our hope is that the interested reader will use this information as a foundation for informed dialog to enhance the quality of patient care.

A final comment must be made about the concept of integrating both prosthetics and orthotics into one volume. Although traditionally considered as somewhat distinct topics, we have found an integrated approach to teaching these subjects to be very logical and effective. Recent developments in materials and fabrication methods and common functional goals for applying these external devices appear to blur some of the long-standing distinctions between these two disciplines. Although comments and techniques from both prosthetics and orthotics may be integrated, the reader is reminded that chapters dealing with anatomical levels of both disciplines appear as separate entities. This allows the text to be used as a quick reference by simply accessing the chapter dealing with the relevant question. Good introductory book for prosthetists/orthotists or others involved in the rehabilitation process

I was pleased to find this book online and save money. I used the book for a specific course in Prosthetic and Orthotic school, but it had a bunch of information I used in all of my classes. I find myself using it as a reference even though the class is over. It gets into pretty good detail about the current modalities and clinical practices, different types of pathologies and accommodative devices for the specifics. A good section on biomechanics and gait , and it was pretty current on mateials as well. I enjoy strange facts as they are mentioned, throughout. I recommend it for anyone involved in caring for amputees or people requiring long term orthotic care, including patients themselves and families. This is a good intro book before the atlases. Easy and fun book to read

I read the first book, and I was intrigued to read the next book in the series. I like the author for her ability to build sexual anticipation, and her description of the sexual scenes. I liked the characters, and the development of their love/passion. I found the transitions from love to sex to conflict a little choppy at times, but the book still moved fairly quickly. I usually like the idea of the rake/innocent girl story with sizzling sexual scenes, so I felt this book met my expectations.

For an afternoon’s escape read – you need look no further than this series!

What a wonderful ride this little series has been: 4 young highlanders cursed by a gypsy are each sentenced to 200-ish years of isolation and penance. Last to come to life is Daman, reputed to be the savior of Innes McKay’s clan. Believing she alone held the secret, Innes spent many hours visiting and talking to the sleeping warrior in a cave not far from her keep. With her father’s death sending the clan into tumult, her own brothers Alistair and Donald are locked in a battle for clan control, and Innes fears the end is near.

When Daman wakes, he is instantly drawn to find something – but he knows not what. His memory, along with his voice are lost. Functioning on instinct, he hears the voice of Innes, and is instantly drawn to her. Saving her from a very angry and murderous Donald, Alistair and Innes welcome him into their clan.

The connection between Innes and Daman is instant – there is a communication that surpasses all words, yet Daman must watch her betrothal to a rival clan head to ensure the safety of the withering McKays. It is here that his friends: Ronan, Morcant and Stefan find their long lost friend.

Much appreciated, but fall just short

This forth book was much anticipated. I could hardly wait to see what happened with Daman. It was ok but, a let down at the end. Would have liked to have more closure since this was the final book.

Another great story from Ms. Grant!! I am sad to see the Rogues of Scotland come to an end. But it was a fun ride. I loved seeing how each of the guys handled their imprisonment and then their release. I will say out of all of the guys I think Daman might have been my favorite. He was the one that seemed to have his head on straight from the beginning. Yet he still was doomed to the same fate as the rest. But in The Seduced we finally learn why the Gypsy's cursed them.
If you have not picked up this series and are looking for a quick read you really should check them out.
