THE SEEDLING STARS: You didn't make an Adapted Man with just a wave of the wand. It involved an elaborate constellation of techniques, known collectively as pantropy, that changed the human pattern in a man's shape and chemistry before he was born. And the pantropists didn't stop there. Education, thoughts, ancestors and the world itself were changed, because the Adapted Men were produced to live and thrive in the alien environments found only in space. They were crucial to a daring plan to colonize the universe.

About the Author
James Blish (1921-75) studied microbiology at Rutgers and then served as a medical laboratory technician in the US army during the Second World War. Among his best-known books are CITIES IN FLIGHT, A CASE OF CONSCIENCE, for which he won the HUGO AWARD in 1959 for Best Novel, DOCTOR MIRABILIS, BLACK EASTER and THE DAY AFTER JUDGEMENT.

A Summer Reading Assignment That is in Fact Interesting

I was instructed to read The Courage of Their Convictions as a summer reading assignment for AP US Government. Usually, I dread reading summer assignments, but this book was written in a way that made the cases relatable and interesting. I appreciated the fact that it had first hand accounts of the major player in each of the suits, the person who was defending their freedoms as an American. It wasn't written in a complex way, the text had a good flow to it. I felt like I was getting a proper idea of how the Supreme Court actually runs, and overall it was a worthwhile read.

Peter Irons, The Courage of Their Convictions (1990)

I have used this book three times in UC and CSU public law classes have taught: Intro to Judicial Process, Intro to Judicial Politics, and American Government. It is a personalized, almost biographical approach to leading constitutional rights cases, replete with the "human" as well as "legal" story behind each of the 16 cases. Though short on some of the important legal arguments at the Supreme Court level, it covers well the dispositons and judicial personalities of the lower courts. More importantly, however, it deals with the suffering and courage of the litigants themselves.
As such, it is a terrific book for both introductory American Government and judicial politics/process courses at the college level.
I have also used Irons' new book JIM CROW'S CHILDREN in my upper division course on Racial Equality and the U.S. Supreme Court at U.C., Irvine, just this summer.

The Courage of Their Convictions: Sixteen Americans

This was a fantastic book! People may know about some Supreme Court decisions and its impact but I do not think people understand why such important cases were brought before the Supreme Court. We never learn in school who these people were, (they are everyday people) and exactly how much courage and determination it takes to fight your case to the Supreme Court (after all I think S.C hears about 1% of all cases filed to the Court). Irons is an academic but boy you can read this in a day-this is not a dreaded book you are assigned to read for school.

The Great Cheikh Anta Diop identified the roots of African culture from which one can trace the branches. No African researcher since, however, has provided a comprehensive analysis connecting the ancient Nile Valley civilizations with the African universe. From the pyramids of Egypt to the great walls of Zimbabwe, Western scholars have attributed the achievements of these prodigious indigenous African civilizations to people culturally and geographically alien to Africa. However, in the case of the ancient Nubian Empire of Kush, which occupied the southern part of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and all of present-day Sudan, one expects reasonable scholars to attribute this African culture to an African people. The present much-needed work traces Diop's great "African cultural commonalities" of matriarchy, totemism, divine kinship, and cosmology to the very core of Kushite culture. This book is on the cutting edge of a new generation of Afrocentric scholarship whose mandate it is to provide a clearer picture of Africa's true nature, it s genius and its genuine contribution to World Civilizations.

Miriam Ma'at-Ka-Re Monges is currently an assistant professor of Sociology/social work at California State University, Chico Campus. Not terribly helpful

I wish that this book did what it said - reconnected the root system of African civilization. This book is in the same vein as Cheik Anta Diop's African Origins of Civilization, but unfortunately she seems more interested in rehashing the same arguments and counters from the 1960s and '70s than she is in writing a concise, African-centered history of Kush and Nubia. I guess I'll have to keep looking...

Objective Afrocentricity vs Biased Eurocentricity!

Any objecive, unbiased and well argued book on African civilizations or history deserves a 5 star for me: the reason being simple, there are not many of such books in the world! Ms Monges has presented both sides of the argument (an art of arguing) and has logically and objectively rejoindered some of the eurocentric views and arguments very well. I have read 3 other books on Africa and Kemet (Egypt) and all share to a great extent the same well argued, objective and afrocentric view as potrayed by Ms Monges. I have always asked myself what do european anthropologists or so-called egyptologists mean by: 'negroid', but not 'negro'; to rephrase, black but not black enough? Indeed I have found several of the their arguments very irrational, absurd and illogical. Indeed Ms Monges does well to deal with most of the misconceptions surrounding Kemet, Kush and Africa. She seeks partly to adduce evidence for the Blackness of Egypt by comparing it to other cultural practices in modern Africa. Something which she does very well! Jesus said: there is nothing that is hidden that will not be revealed. Thank You Ms Monges for you objective Afrocentricity!

Rather Difficult for 6th Grader But an Accessible Discussion for High School and Up

This book was assigned to my advanced-reading 6th grader to use for an ELA project (the idea was to take a nonfiction book with text, and create a picture book based on it). Apparently, my son had been complaining that the other assignments were too easy (heh, hope this was a lesson learned in that regard).

Although the vocabulary and somewhat dry and academic style of this book presented some obstacles for him (for comparison, he has read The Lord of the Flies, Fahrenheit 451, and Cat's Cradle with no problem), he ultimately enjoyed reading it and especially liked digging through the bibliography for more information. This makes me extremely happy, especially since the subject matter is both afro-centric and female-centric. It frustrates me no end that in 2013 liberal arts education is still so focused on white, western males. Nothing wrong with them, just, the world is a rich and varied place, with more historical context than we know. It is a beautiful thing to learn. And this book presents what, for many students (and life-learners), will be new information and a new point of view, in a very accessible form.

Never in all my life

Have I been so moved by a book about a dominatrix. Well, it's not actually about a dominatrix. It's about the psychology of irreverence, about women and men who are compelled to be and visit dominatrices. Just ... it's a page-turner. Just ... treat yourself. "Fifty Shades of Grey," eat Zabrisky's characters' dust.

Pathos and Pathology

No one excels at writing eloquently about the seamy side of life like a Russian writer, and Zarina Zabrisky follows deftly in the footsteps of Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Nabokov and Solzhenitsyn.
In We, Monsters Zabrisky valiantly explores the pathos and pathology of perversion.
Our heroine, whom we shall call Rose, is attempting to write a novel. She feels that her work will be enhanced if she becomes a dominatrix. “At two a.m., I was in front of the laptop again. I opened a new file, the blank page yearning. I wrote the story of finding YourFantasyWorld.com. All those details could become a novel one day. Everything could turn into a novel” Rose is a Ukrainian immigrant, married and the mother of three school-aged children.
Zabrisky's novel is narrated by Rose, but it is frequently punctuated with foot notes by Dr. Michael Strong, a clinical psychologist and a leading expert on questions of sexuality. Dr. Strong's bent is purely Freudian. He is the author of a clinical psychology tome called “Deviations.” Throughout Zabrisky's novel, Dr. Strong “psychoanalyzes” Rose and the other dominatrices and their clients. One gets the impression that Dr. Strong is cheering the deviants on: “Like great Zen masters, deviants explode the bondage of reality and break free from the chains of everyday life. They are the Masters of their lives, and Slaves only to their passions. The real slaves are the mediocre majority, blindly serving the established clockwork mechanism of survival and procreation. The only way to become truly human is through freeing our energies, rising above good and evil and becoming what we are.” The Nietzscheian
perspective.
In the course of her career as a dominatrix, Rose has more and more difficulty in discerning fantasy from reality in her own life. She obsesses about her childhood in Odessa and her dead sister, Oksana, struggling to understand how much of what she remembers of her past is real.
One of her clients is Josh, a foot fetishist. Mommy, the chief dominatrix asks Rose “So what was strange about your guy?”
“That's the thing. He seemed so normal.”
“What IS normal?” Mommy roared with her haunted house laughter, then coughed. She rotated her chair and faced me. “Are you normal? Or me? Who's normal?” She raised her knobby finger. “No one, honey. No such thing as bloody normal.”
Most of the clients seem far from normal, but the only one who is really dangerous is Mike the (censored), a charismatic sort who, during their first session, only wants to talk. He draws Rose out to the point where she reveals enough of her past to him that he can fill in the blank spaces that she doesn't want to deal with. The result will be like the collision of matter and anti-matter.

a direct, intimate, first-hand account fromt the point of view of a dominatrix and the community of customers and coworkers that surrounds her. a wild and fun read, especially the chapter on the instructions on how to become a dominatrix. this is grass-roots writing at its best: honest, powerful, personal, but more than anything, meaningful. here's something raw, true, that goes beyond just the craft of great writing, it feeds us with truth, and as with any good story, makes us hungrier, more curious, and grateful that there's something we can read that makes us live more.

Fantastic read

Once again Kirsten Osbourne has written a fantastic story about finding love in an unconventional way. Daniel wants a wife and children but he is a workaholic and not sure of the whole idea of love, Brenda wants to be married and have children so she contacts Dr Lachele after her friends gets married and find love through her. This book is so fantastic as you see them come together and find a happily ever after

Kirsten' s Best Book Yet!

I think I'll just title all of my reviews this way going forward! Kirsten Osbourne is a phenomenal story-teller with a wicked sense of humor. Happily ever after is a goal we all desire, that's why we read romance. Brenda and Daniel's story kept me at the edge of my seat with a goofy grin on my face. This series is the best EVER and should be devoured slowly like a fine meal.

It has a few typos. A couple pages are wrong. Question 84 on page 89 to be exact. References the wrong section for an answer that they get wrong on the answer area. Asks about db level, tell you to check circuits and pathways of nfpa 72 2013.

I'm really impressed by the depth and intensity the new book "Governance, by Ismail A. Ismail", reconstructs the missing strands on Somalia's history and its varrying political edifices. A dissection of important historic events is shown in a manner that can hardly be explained by those with limited grasp and view of our history, culture and politics. It also traces Somalia's present societal ills (at most) to the colonial designs of Italy and its fascist policies, which had even lingered in full effect after its defeat in WWII. The author also argues that good governance (as the author is an expert in the field), requires a combination of indigenous and modern solution based on finding compatibality between the traditional and modern structures of governance. Simply Brilliant and much overdue! I couldn't put it down
