On Grief and Grace

When I lost my baby in the 1980's no one was talking about the grief of this kind of loss. People said the most uncaring insensitive things - I'd have another one, God needed another angel, and all sorts of ridiculous things. This book has sound theology, and explains what BIBLICAL teachings are about the soul of a baby. Further, it explores a concept many Christians seem to misunderstand - GRACE. In addition to miscarriages and still births, this book addresses abortion. Parents who have lost a baby to an abortion deal with the loss, and the guilt of their decision as well. This is a wonderful book about both the grief and the grace of God and His love for all of us. Most of all, it gives parents who have suffered the loss of a baby hope that they will, indeed, hold their child in heaven.

Author’s Foreword This book is unfinished. The Filipino people shall finish it for me. I wrote this volume very, very slowly. 1 could have done with it In three months after my defection from the conjugal dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos on February 20.1975. Instead, I found myself availing of every excuse to slow it down. A close associate, Marcelino P. Sarmiento, even warned me, “Baka mapanis ’yan." (Your book could become stale.) While I availed of almost any excuse not to finish the manuscript of this volume, I felt the tangible voices of a muted people back home in the Philippines beckoning to me from across the vast Pacific Ocean. In whichever way I turned, I was confronted by the distraught images of the Filipino multitudes crying out to me to finish this work, lest the frailty of human memory -- or any incident a la Nalundasan – consign to oblivion the matters I had in mind to form the vital parts of this book. It was as if the Filipino multitudes and history itself were surging in an endless wave presenting a compelling demand on me to San Francisco, California perpetuate the personal knowledge I have gained on the infamous machinations of Ferdinand E. Marcos and his overly ambitious wife, Imelda, that led to a day of infamy in my country, that Black Friday on September 22, 1972, when martial law was declared as a means to establish history’s first conjugal dictatorship. The sense of urgency in finishing this work was also goaded by the thought that Marcos does not have eternal life and that the Filipino people are of unimaginable forgiving posture. I thought that, if I did not perpetuate this work for posterity, Marcos might unduly benefit from a Laurelian statement that, when a man dies, the virtues of his past are magnified and his faults are reduced to molehills. This is a book for which so much has been offered and done by Marcos and his minions so that it would never see the light of print. Now that it is off the press. I entertain greater fear that so much more will be done to prevent its circulation, not only in the Philippines but also in the United States. But this work now belongs to history. Let it speak for itself in the context of developments within the coming months or years. Although it finds great relevance in the present life of the present life of the Filipinos and of Americans interested in the study of subversion of democratic governments by apparently legal means, this work seeks to find its proper niche in history which must inevitably render its judgment on the seizure of government power from the people by a lame duck Philippine President. If I had finished this work immediately after my defection from the totalitarian regime of Ferdinand and Imelda, or after the vicious campaign of the dictatorship to vilify me in July-August. 1975, then I could have done so only in anger. Anger did influence my production of certain portions of the manu-script. However, as I put the finishing touches to my work, I found myself expurgating it of the personal venom, the virulence and intemperate language of my original draft. Some of the materials that went into this work had been of public knowledge in the Philippines. If I had used them, it was with the intention of utilizing them as links to heretofore unrevealed facets of the various ruses that Marcos employed to establish his dictatorship. Now, I have kept faith with the Filipino people. I have kept my rendezvous with history. I have, with this work, discharged my obligation to myself, my profession of journalism, my family and my country. I had one other compelling reason for coming out with this work at the great risks of being uprooted from my beloved country, of forced separation from my wife and children and losing their affection, and of losing everything I have in my name in the Philippines — or losing life itself. It is that I wanted to make a public expiation for the little influence that I had . . . .(more inside)

Rare account of an infamous regime

Astounding account of the crimes and excesses of that wretched couple who ruled the Philippines; and the sharks and crocodiles who surrounded them. There should be a way to have it republished so that the crimes and misdeeds of those monsters are NOT forgotten since the Marcoses tried to buy every copy extant at the time and even sent agents to all the libraries that had copies and swiped those copies. I don't know if it's availalbe now in eBook form, but whatever few, hard copies around are rare and mostly in the hands of people who saw through the Marcos' scam early on.

Waltzing with a dictator was a better read, but this was written from the heart of a patriot

The author thought the Filipinos will complete the story as he would like to, but if he is still alive, he would be deeply disappointed. He was not alone anyway to think and believe that Filipinos are worth dying for. Maybe less than 5% of the Filipino population have read this book that should have been a requirement for Filipino students.

The writer suffered for being the whistle blower with his son tortured and killed in presence, his eyes gouged out and beaten to death. Tibo Mijares subsequently died for revealing the truth. I believe my story raises important questions for anyone who seeks to unravel the physics of history and seeks to understand a universal spiritual yearning. My spiritual yearnings led me to Islam. The names Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner stir up potent evidence that challenge American Exceptionalism. My book begs the following questions: Why are some white Americans violent toward people of color? Why has America been engaged in wars in every century? Why can’t America shake off the stupor of racism? Why are so many Americans of all ethnicities in pain? The claim that America is still building a more perfect union fails to convince me that America is a work in progress. I believe that after 230 years of the American Empire, there are a large number of people in America that still consider African Americans as quasi-citizens of sorts. I don’t claim to have answers to every question. However, I believe my memoir will assist and inform activist of all ethnicities who support the "Black Lives Matter" movement. Moreover, I believe my memoir illustrates that my struggle to find answers to issues of race and class in America, and your innate desire for answers, are similar. I pray that the process I describe of mending my cracked mirror, over decades, will inform and enrich your life.

This is an autobiographical account of a time in African American history where the grit of the movement has not been examined. The willingness of students to risk their educations to stand up for justice during this era has few chronicles that can compare to this.
Zaid Ansari exposes the hardship of selling papers for the Nation of Islam in the ghetto, with the same bravery he brandishes in exposing the controversial, duplicitous parts of the Elijah Mohammed years.
The writer's notable involvement in numerous parts of history in the African American community is a testimony that is carefully entwined with his own life story.
This reader wishes to have known more about his sister, children, and friends that accompanied him on this journey. Perhaps a documentary devoted to explore the underlying layers of this story that couldn't be captured in such a confined space as a novel, would serve this life story justice.
A must read for the younger generation as they embark on their own life's journey still embroiled in a quest for a home where BLACK LIVES MATTER!

A Candid Glimpse

This narrative is a candid look into the transformation of an American youth as he grows into manhood and encounters the American social realities of race, class, and religion. Not since the Autobiography of Malcolm X have we had a chance to get a realistic glimpse into the dynamics of change that is involved in the Blackamerican Sunni Muslim soul as it constantly confronts the daily struggles of balancing the American, black, and Muslim identities. Once I started reading, it was hard to put the book down. There are moments that will make you laugh and moments that will make you say, "That's why!" This is not simply the journey of Zaid Ansari but rather the history of the Black Power Movement and Islam in Black America. Cracked Mirrors is a must read for any student, researcher, or teacher of African American Studies, American Studies, Black Religion, Muslims in America, or Blackamerican Muslim Studies.

I see him as a voice of the civil rights movement and a voice for oppressed people everywhere. Have just ordered the book and can't wait to read it. Very good book - with interesting history of MC Drag Racing

Drag racing seems to be a place of great inovation and creative engineering. I especially liked the quotes from some of the pioneers in the sport and the early days when rules were slack and speeds went up. Rev on the redline...!

Absorbing and Totally Fascinating

You cannot help but notice John's obsession with drag racing as you read this book. Through meticulous research and dozens of personal interviews, this book is the first truly comprehensive history of drag racing. I hold a high bar for motorcycle books since reading several by Allan Girdler on Harleys (XR-750 and Harley-Davidson Racing, 1934-1986 are likely of your interest). I found this beautiful book authentic and special. If you are looking for great historical content from the early days to present and drool-worthy photos, this is an awesome book for you.

About the Author
Mariëlle Hoefnagels is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and the Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology at the University of Oklahoma, where she teaches courses in introductory biology, mycology, and science writing. She has received the University of Oklahoma General Education Teaching Award and the Longmire Prize (the Teaching Scholars Award from the College of Arts and Sciences). She has also been awarded honorary memberships in several student honor societies. Dr. Hoefnagels received her BS in environmental science from the University of California at Riverside, her MS in soil science from North Carolina State University, and her PhD in plant pathology from Oregon State University. Her dissertation work focused on the use of bacterial biological control agents to reduce the spread of fungal pathogens on seeds. In addition to authoring Biology: The Essentials and Biology: Concepts and Investigations, her recent publications have focused on creating investigative teaching laboratories and integrating technology into introductory biology classes. She also maintains a blog on teaching nonmajors biology, and she frequently gives presentations on study skills and related topics to student groups across campus.

Quick read, but very entertaining

4-4 1/2 stars. I thought this was a little different from other books I read from this author--especially this series. I thought it had a "lighter" feel to it--more of an actual romance than the violence and suspense I notice from these books. I really liked the characters--I felt the were very well done and relatable. There was a bit of action, and a couple sex scenes that were just enough. Mostly, I got a feel for the struggling female alpha trying to keep her young pack together, and a totally alpha male who steps into a role no one--even him--expected. Secondary characters were just as entertaining, but didn't take away from main couple. It was a rather short story, and I read it quickly, but I really felt it packed a lot in.

I absolutely cannot say enough about this amazing book and the ones to come, because, it's extremely important and totally rare for a book to leave such an indelible mark on the person who has the pleasure and privilege to be able to read something that is not the norm in this genre of wolfpacks and I know what a great book looks like, because I have read more than 40,000 books in my lifetime and I am only 45 years old and I will probably have read more than 100,000 books by the end of my life and I know when a book will be successful and I know that this particular book and series is going to be one of the best series out there for people like me who loves to read this type of books on the supernatural and I would be remiss if I didn't recommend this book and series to one and all, because I am recommending that everyone who likes to read about the supernatural, should go out and purchase this book and series right now!! This author"s style of writing allows her to weave her story while developing her characters. If her name is on the book, most likely I have her that book. I hope you continue the series. Sometimes it's nice to see an "epilogue-type" and possible supporting characters path taken (i.e. Jase, the two girls, et al). Thank you!

I've read through other information on carb cycling, but the information in this book was laid out perfectly. It was simple, easy to read andfull of information. Even with all the information it was never overcomplicated. It includes recipes, shopping lists, meal plans and even ajournal. It makes making the switch to this lifestyle easy and provideslifestyle tips as well! This book is a steal! If you're looking to trycarb cycling, look no further than this book right here!

Carb cycling simplified

Very well written, easy to understand and packed with information. I had already started my diet change after reading books by Chris Powell, and this book is an excellent supplement which breaks down the concepts and explains it very well. I love the recipe section, since I am always looking for a new taste to add to my diet. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to try carb cycling. I can tell you that the concept works! I've been on many 'fad' diets over the years and have yo-yo dieted quite a bit. This is not a fad or intense diet that will leave you starving. I am always full, the eating lifestyle is easy to understand and follow. My first two weeks cycling, I lost 16 lbs. Everyone won't have the same results, but others in an online group I'm in are reporting similar results. Happy reading and best of luck on your weightloss journey and lifestyle change!

Great ideas to make fitness easy rather than being a chore

Before reading this book, my wife and I did all the wrong things. Here is an example that will make you laugh, and at the same time, I’m sharing our progress on the road of carb cycling.

We would buy bags of frozen pasta skillet entrees, bad enough to spend the money on a meal said to be four servings but not enough for two, and we would then add pasta to the pasta. I kid you not. I’d make half a box of rigatoni, and once cooked, I’d add that to the skillet pasta meal as it cooked.

Then we started using the smartphone app that Jesse recommends in this book, and wow - that was a wake-up call.
So then we added vegetables to the pasta meal, instead of adding more pasta, and it was great. Finally we asked, why are we doing this? So now we just sautee our own fresh vegetables that are listed in the book, add white wine, lemon, and seasonings, and leave out the pasta altogether. If we must have carbs, we can make a SIDE of bowtie pasta with some sun dried tomatoes, and olive oil and pesto.

Regarding exercise, we did none before reading this book, and with the nice weather (finally) we do the suggested loop walk recommended in the book, almost every night. We both started losing weight to the point where we said yes, we can actually set for ourselves weight loss goals. That was something we never did before.

Jesse’s recommendations are good, and the food lists are helpful. We’re beginners, so I would recommend this book to anyone wanting some motivation and a multi-pronged approach that is not intimidating on any one level. Carb Cycling is a book that has enough flexibility to allow you to be gentle with yourself and go at your own pace, using the ideas and lists as you feel comfortable.

We enjoyed the recipe sections, and our favorites are the salads and snacks recommendations, which we do use regularly.
Of course, this book is educational too, but not in a boring way, but rather keeping it simple and summarizing what you might otherwise have to scour from a dozen sources. Jesse covers the basics of sugar, protein, and fat by using several different contexts and so helping the lessons stick, while you shed a few pounds and feel way more fit.

Finally losing some weight!

Well, I am 64 years old and have been trying for the past 4 years to lose ANY weight. But was just always frustrated since the scale numbers stayed static. But with the easy to understand nutritional awareness gained from this book, a quick read, the pounds are finally coming off. The recipe section is not extensive, but provides a sound starting point. Thought that pasta and breads had to be part of every meal...but now know better. It feels great to be making better food choices. Thanks.
