A Student Review of the American Political Dictionary

As a student of American politics, I have found that this book is the most helpfull resource for finding, identifying, analyzing, and comparing every American political concept. From Article I of the Constitution to the 27th amendmant to The Americans with Disablitities Act of 1990 to Marbury v. Madison. This book is complete in every way. The format and layout of this book makes it easy to connect to other related concepts of American political culture by giving the student a coincise knowledge of our government. This book also greatly prepares the high school student for the United States Government and Politics AP exam. If you are looking for a great suplimental teaching and learning tool then look no further because this is it.

Great book on Poli Sci 101

I bought The American Political Dictionary by Plano and Greenburg for an Hispanic friend who didn't know the difference between the House of Representative and the Senate. I was surprised that the book had a least doubled in length since I taught in 1973, and the text was arranged by topic with a glossary to find terms instead of having all the entries arranged in alphabetical order. My amigo, however, said it was extremely easy to look up terms and find the desired information for his college course work. He was very pleased with the gift and said it really helped him a lot. Mucho gracias seniors Plano and Greenburg.

Great starting point for studying the intersection of science and sound

This book is an excellent starting place for someone who wants a somewhat quantitative treatment of the science of sound as it relates to music, but does not have the advanced math background necessary to digest something like "The Physics of Musical Instruments". The chapters and sections in this third edition are the same as in the previous edition, however some changes have been made to the content. The book is updated with more current references to the end-of-chapter bibliographies, and there is some new material, especially in areas affected by the personal computer's role in the digital processing of sound.

The author provides an integrated understanding of three major areas: the production of sound by various sources, the propagation of sound from source to listener, and the perception of sound by the human brain.

For easier reading, each chapter starts with an introductory section that sets up the chapter. There are also summaries and lists of symbols, terms, and relations highlighting the most important terms and quantitative expressions in each chapter. There are realistic and interesting exercise sets containing both qualitative and quantitative questions for each chapter, with most chapters containing 20-25 exercises. There are also projects included that provide out-of-class assignments that generally require students to do research. There are approximately three of these in each chapter. Finally, several new photographs have been added to this third edition, particularly of the inner ear structure and of the vocal cords in motion.

Like the previous reviewer, I make a habit of purchasing and reading several textbooks a year, and sometimes I am very disappointed and sometimes I am not. This is one of those purchases that I found most worthwhile. If you are interested in the intersection of math, acoustics, perception, and musical instruments I highly recommend it. A math background up to the level of algebra and geometry should be sufficient to understand the quantitative portions of the book. The table of contents is as follows:

This book is a thorough overview of physics behind music. In the first part of the book, Hall lays the foundation with an investigation into waves, sound propagation, sound measurement, and the human ear. The middle third of the book takes up families of instruments, and how they work to create musical sounds. The last part of the book investigates room acoustics, sound reproduction, and the perception of intervals, tunings, and musical structure. Each chapter includes references and suggestions for further reading, numerous mathematical exercises for practicing the concepts covered in the chapter, and a list of potential projects for further investigation. The book includes a glossary and answers to selected problems, as well as an index.
I read quite a few textbooks for work and occasionally just for interest's sake, but this one really stands out. After reading the first few chapters, I found myself wishing I could sit in on Hall's lectures. His style is intensely personal, and his explanations are incredibly clear. I'll admit that sometimes my eyes glossed over while slogging through some of the numbers and charts, but it was mainly my fault for not being a more active reader. In order to get the most from this book, you really need to read it with calculator in hand, or better yet, an Excel spreadsheet open, ready to try out the numbers and scenarios that Hall provides us with. Nevertheless, the math is kept quite simple- -no calculus; if you can do algebra, you should be able to get through the book.
I've found the information in the book to be quite useful. Hall's description of how resonance works in drums has helped me make sense of my tabla teacher's pickiness about where my fingers strike the tabla heads. And at last I understand the physics behind why some rooms in my house are acoustically dead, and others are alive. Hall has opened up a new world of ideas for me, and I will be thinking them through for years to come. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how music really works.

Scope of Halo is too much for just one book

Turns out this art book is sort of a look back at Halo from the art. That's looking back at 10 years of Halo, which really needs a few books to be comprehensive. So this book tries to cover in its 192 pages, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: ODST, Halo: Wars, Halo: Legends and Halo: Reach. Seven titles if you're counting.

The art is grouped in chapters that look at the environment, the enemies, vehicles, alien beings, the good guys, Master Chief and homeworlds.

The art is beautiful. There are sketches and also huge paintings. Some are development art, some made it to final. Selected bits are featured so you only get snippets of information, bits and pieces of the whole Halo story. There isn't much duplication compared to other art books because the book shows new art and is made up of stuff that were left out in other books.

Because of the immense scope of Halo, this book is a bit underwhelming even though the art is spectacular. Something in my mind keeps telling me there's more. If you've seen Halo Encyclopedia, you know that there's a whole lot more.

Not quite what I'd hoped for, but worth a purchase.

I really enjoy this book, but it's not the be-all and end-all tome of Halo art they'd have you think. It's not a bad book by any means, it has a ton of great work in it, but coming from all of the other Halo books out there that feature art, I felt like this was a bit scattershot, more or less a grab bag of content. My biggest issue is that in an attempt to touch on as many facets of the entire franchise as it can, it leaves a lot of stones unturned and isn't very comprehensive.

Other books such as the Art of Halo, (which features Halo and Halo 2), the Art of Halo 3, the Halo Graphic Novel art section, the art section in the limited edition Halo: Reach strategy guide, and even the Halo Encyclopedia, tend to do a better job or show off the better work.

It's definitely worth a purchase, especially for Halo fans, but I regard it more as supplementary content than anything else. If you want to take a look at what I think is a perfect artbook in terms of layout and content, check out the Art of District 9. That's 160 pages for ONE film, versus 190 pages for the whole of the Halo franchise, IE 6 games and other content. Hard to do Halo justice in so few pages in my opinion, but it's a worthy attempt.

A great art book for any fan

So I didn't actually purchase this book. I won it from a YouTube contest and the book is signed by Frank O'Connor (Former Content Manager at Bungie who joined Microsoft and became the Creative Director for 343 Industries). I have played every Halo game to date, including Halo 1-3, Reach, ODST, and Wars. I'm a huge fan of the series and can't wait for Halo 4 and the Reclaimer trilogy. Hopefully even a Halo movie. This book is 192 pages.

This is my first art book so here is my perspective. Playing every game in the Halo series, I really didn't know or understand how concept art and sketches start and what processes the creative teams use to make them come to life. I have a new perspective on what goes into making characters, weapons, vehicles, planets, aliens, etc. basically everything that is in a game.

This book shows everything from the Halo series. When I say everything, I mean original sketches all the way to their evolved and final forms. Art from every game up to Halo Reach. Master Chief, Cortana, The Flood, The Covenant forces including grunts, brutes, elites, hunters and jackals, vehicles including the Warthog, Tank, and Covenant vehicles, all weapons and armor, ships including the Pillar of Autumn, and all world settings including Reach, Ring World, Earth, etc.

While I am sure there are more extensive art books for Halo (including the Halo encyclopedia), this book is very detailed and the images are truly vivid. If you are a fan of Halo or into the conceptual art in video games, this book is for you.

It's important to realize this is Abridged. I did not now it when I bought it. I checked the book out and read the book at the same time I was listening to it an the way to work, and I feel the abridged recording is perfectly fine. I'm just and an average Joe and not a literary critic so I'm not certain everyone would agree. If you have always wanted to see what Ann R's books are about but are put off by the raw volume to text, this is a great opportunity.

Poorly edited audio

As advertised the audio book is abridged. However, the recording is very sloppily edited. All throughout the 12 disk set the reader is cut off mid sentence which I found to be very irritating and dramatically reduced my enjoyment of the story. I realize the book is long and had to be shortened for audio, but seriously they can't find a way to edit this professionally?

Quick delivery good seller but it was difficult to know when CD was finished and time to insert next one. It just repeats in a loop until you eject , with no sound notification for end of CD. This is fault of manufacturer not seller.
