Great first piano book

Exactly what I was looking for to help me guide my child through early piano lessons. I have moderate skills at the piano, but I definitely needed a curriculum to guide me in teaching my own child. I love that the very first lesson begins with playing a simple tune. I feel like that hooks the child into thinking piano is fun and gives them the confidence to think they can do this.

Alfred Method is great for beginner students . . . and teachers!

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.

I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.

Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!

I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

My son's teacher uses these for piano lessons (he said he's been using them for 20 years). The songs are really nice, especially toward the middle to end of the book. It was rewarding to play for a few months and then make it so soon to such lovely songs. I think they did a great job of selecting nice music for very new piano players.

The theory book is basically the workbook that accompanies the regular music book.

This book was a great buy. It was in brand new condition and I used an amazon gift card to purchase it because it was at a pretty low price. Although this book was required for a class, I found the articles interesting to read. Each section was well written and the style of the articles made them easy to read.

Race is explained too complex in this book. Too many topics being covered and too many things thrown at you at the same time it is difficult to focus.

About the Author
Raymond Merrill Smullyan (born May 25, 1919) is an American mathematician, concert pianist, logician, philosopher, and magician.

Born in Far Rockaway, New York, his first career (like Persi Diaconis a generation later) was stage magic. He then earned a BSc from the University of Chicago in 1955 and his Ph.D. from the Princeton University in 1959. He is one of many outstanding logicians to have studied under Alonzo Church.

Smullyan is the author of many books on recreational mathematics, recreational logic, etc. Most notably, one is titled What Is the Name of This Book?.

Better than Sam Loyd!

This is probably the best book on logic puzzles ever written (aside from other Smullyan books, that is). It is witty, challenging, and has problems of all kinds. The first half is framed as a continuation to the Arabian Nights, with ingenious and original puzzles (aside from the occasional oldy snuck in) given an Arabian touch.

However, after those brilliant puzzles comes the greatest part of the book. The second half is a collection of puzzles, paradoxes, and even has a couple of chapters on coercive logic, invented by Raymond Smullyan himself.

I reccomend this book to any logic buff, or indeed to anyone who's ever enjoyed a logic puzzle. And if you don't fall into either category, then you need this book all the more.

It's never been so much fun to learn.

This book is a cleaverly crafted web of logic problems with thier corresponding solutions. It begins with simple riddles and math problems then quickly leads you to deeper and more facinating problems. These puzzles are arranged in a wonderful narrative with the problems getting increasing complex. Depending on your level of interest, some of the more complex puzzles can easliy go over your head if you let them. The book is definately a lot of fun for math and logic buffs that enjoy being entertained and challenged.

Smullyan is a national treasure.

Another challenging set of puzzles from one of our most inventive minds. The book not only has a range of great puzzles, and introduces 'coercive logic' puzzles, but is fun to read as well.
The use of the Scheherazade tale as a backdrop is clever and fun. As usual Smullyan gets us to a deeper understanding of logical theory, while we think we're just playing games!
