About the Author
Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming, PhD, is a world-renowned author, scholar, and teacher of Tai chi chuan. He has been involved in Chinese martial arts since 1961 and maintains over 55 schools in 18 countries. His writing and teaching include the subjects of kung fu, tai chi chuan, massage, meditation, chin na, and he is a leading authority on qigong. He is the author of over 35 books and 80 videos. Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming resides at his California Retreat Center near Eureka, California.

Does Dr. Yang Ever Write A Bad Book?

I am not a practitioner of the Tai Chi or the internal arts, but I do value and appreciate the things that I have learned from those art forms that I was able to utilize in my chosen arts of Kyokushin Karate, Tae Kwon Do (the original art form and not the modern "sport" version) and especially in Krav Maga. The most important things that I have learned are the breathing techniques and relaxation exercises. They have been a really noticeable benefit to my own health and training that I have incorporated them into my teaching curriculum. This book, as with all of Dr. Yang's books and videos, is loaded with lots of valuable and useful information for anyone interested in learning Tai Chi, and also for those of you, who like me, may be looking to improve and enhance their own health and skills by practicing some of the exercises and techniques demonstrated within these pages.

Good supplemental material for the practicing novice

The aim of Tai Chi Qigong is to help the reader attain a higher level of understanding of the body’s internal energy flow while practicing tai chi. Overall, the book is well written and it has easy-to-follow exercises. About half of the book is theory (explaining breathing, how to lead Qi through the body, etc), while the second half covers application through several Tai Chi Qigong exercises. The second section goes into concise, short and to the point details about the movements, covering things from body position to breathing. As with all martial arts and physical activity, you really need in-person input and feedback to truly understand and carry out these movements, so this book can be considered a solid supplemental material for the practicing novice student interested in bolstering their practice and starting the journey toward a more serious understanding.

One last thing to note: On the back of the book is a QR Code that lets to view seven video samples of the DVD that was made to go along with the book. It would be nice if later editions of this book include a totally online version of the DVD (my DVD collection is bad enough as is).

Qi Gong information treasure!

Tai Chi Qigong is another excellent book by Dr. Yang Jwing Wing. As a newcomer to the world of Qigong, Dr. Yang's book gave a wealth of information concerning the different types of Qi, the nature of Qi, the theory behind why Qi is important for health, and how Qi can be applied in everyday life. Since the focus of this book is Tai Chi Qigong, Tai Chi theory is also touched upon. As a martial artist, I found the passages on Qi in martial applications very thought provoking.
The illustrations also help one understand the flow of Qi through the body and the still photos along with the arrows show one how to perform these exercises. Dr. Yang's real-world prose helps as well. His scientific explanations helps those unfamiliar with the more traditional Chinese flowery, poetic language grasp some of the key concepts of something that is complex. This book is excellent for both seasoned Qi Gong and Tai Chi practitioners as well as beginners looking for some information on how to begin a Qi Gong practice. Tai Chi Qigong could also function as an excellent supplement aid for one who has a Qi Gong teacher and wants to have a study guide at home.
I recommend Tai Chi Qigong for both those who want to practice or even those who want to know more on Qi and Qi Gong theory in addition to Tai Chi practitioners who want to know more on how to move Qi through their bodies and generate life more life essence energy.
