Ronald Reagan, by Michael Schaller

In this short biography, Michael Schaller, acclaimed historian of the American political right, offers readers a poignant account of Ronald Reagan's life and achievements, from his small-town upbringing in rural Illinois to his cinematic success in Hollywood, entry into politics as governor of California, and meteoric rise to the White House, where he served for eight years. The polarizing Great Communicator oversaw many developments that changed the face of American politics and life-the Iran-Contra Affair, the establishment of "Reaganomics," the largest military buildup in peacetime US history--and as such remains a figure about whom much is written and much has yet to be discovered. Schaller revisits each of these episodes during and leading up to the Reagan presidency, taking into account the latest scholarship and research. In doing so, he makes clear their significance at the time and in later years.

While most presidential biographies approach 1,000 pages, this succinct narrative comes in at just over 100 pages, continuing the tradition of excellence in brevity established by James McPherson's New York Times bestseller Abraham Lincoln and Alan Brinkley's recent short biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Schaller's biography of Ronald Reagan will be available in time to commemorate the centennial of Reagan's birth, an opportune time to reflect on the accomplishments of America's fortieth president.

From Booklist
The hands-down most controversial president in recent memory receives notably evenhanded treatment by Schaller in Oxford’s series of brief lives of the U.S. chief executives. There’s no getting around the erstwhile actor’s habit of borrowing from his screen experience for ostensibly true exempla for his inspirational speeches. But that same experience guaranteed that he could react winningly to stress, and he won the nation’s admiration for the humor and grit with which he treated the assassination attempt on him early in his first term. His political habit of campaigning for policies—tax and spending cuts, shrinking the federal government, prohibiting abortion—that he very quickly abandoned presents difficulties for his right-wing encomiasts, in particular. Reagan was much more pragmatic and prone to compromise than his reputation then and now allows, and that served him especially well in his dealings with Gorbachev’s faltering Soviet Union. A fine stepping-stone to the vast literature on Reagan, pro and con, Schaller’s summary belongs in virtually all U.S. libraries. --Ray Olson

Review

"Michael Schaller's Ronald Reagan tells the remarkable story of one of America's most influential presidents intelligently and effectively. Like Reagan himself, the book is eloquent, focused, and to the point, making it a fine addition to this series." -- Gil Troy, author of Morning in America: How Ronald Reagan Invented the 1980s and The Reagan Revolution: A Very Introduction

Counterpoint

I enjoyed reading Michael Schaller's "Ronald Reagan"since it helps show how public perception can sometimes be different from reality. While I do not agree with all of Schaller's points, I think he highlights many of the Gipper's flaws and shows how the man could simply overlook obstacles. The GOP certainly was looking for a hero after the Nixon/Agnew fiasco so the tendency by many to embellish Reagan's accomplishments is often overdone. Reagan benefited from a dramatic wave of technology (PCs/microchips/software), lower interest rates (thank you Volker), and a break in oil prices. He did facilitate many positive changes (National Science Foundation funding) and didn't wage a major war to show he was tough. The book made me think of both the good and bad things that happened during Reagan's tenure and perhaps realize that this president did not change government very much. It's a good offset to some of the blindly adulatory books on the man (and I was/am a Reagan supporter).

A Young Reagan Fan

Let's be quite frank, shall we? This book is partisan as Hell. I implore you, prospective buyer, to stay away from this book! Read Edmund Morris' Dutch (italicize) instead of this crap.

Great biography of President Regan -- not too long and yet covers all the pertinent facts of his life in an unbiased way. I bought this to read to my elderly friend who an no longer read herself and she thoroughly enjoyed it.
