A “BACKGKROUND FOR WOMANIST THEOLOGY”

Stephanie MItchem teaches religious studies at the University of South Carolina. She has also written Name It and Claim It?: Prosperity Preaching in the Black Church, African American Women Tapping Power And Spiritual Wellness, and African American Folk Healing.
She explains in the Preface to this 2002 book, “Simply put, womanist theology is the systematic, faith-based exploration of the many facets of the African-American women’s religiosity. Womanist theology is based on the complex realities of black women’s lives. Womanist scholars recognize and name the imagination and initiative that African American women have utilized in developing sophisticated religious responses to their lives. This book will give background for womanist theology. Both the objective visions of the theological enterprise and the subjective vistas of black women’s faith experiences become windows to a clearer understanding of womanist theology. Yet, as an introductory discussion, this text will not explain everything about womanist theology.” (Pg. ix)
She observes, “Womanist theology starts with analysis of roles assigned to African American women by their families and the dominant culture, the persistent stereotypes about black women, the combination of race with gender, and recognition of diversity among women. For black women to do this analysis is, in itself, empowering as we discover truths about ourselves.” (Pg. 23)
She states, “Womanist theology must draw from the meanings that already exist in black women’s lives. The lived theologies of individual black women cannot be dismissed as the empty activities of the ignorant. Womanist theologians recognize the richness of black women’s communal expressions of theology. These lived theologies become part of the womanist theological text.” (Pg. 49)
She points out, “Womanist theology becomes a center where all the ideas already raised have a home with safe space for discussion and discovery. Womanist theology is an opportunity to state the meanings of God in the real time of black women’s lives. Womanist theology explores the magic of black women’s religious meaning-worlds, in all the various forms… Womanist theology brings unstated assumptions about black women to a place where they can be explored, refined, and celebrated or debunked.” (Pg. 60)
She acknowledges, “[Patricia Hill] Collins’s comments on womanist thought indicate the complex discussions among black women scholars who seek to shape their disciplines and to name themselves in the process. Her comments bring into relief the reality that the lines of demarcation between black feminist and womanist are often blurred.” (Pg. 90)
She summarizes, “Womanist theology is focused on black women, analyzing the intricate layers of their lives. This focus aims to uncover the ordinary theologies that operate within black women’s lives and incorporate these ideas in womanist theological constructions… Ethical and social analyses of all forms of oppressions give definition to womanist theology. Ongoing dialogues with other perspectives are constitutive of constructions of womanist theology.” (Pg. 105-106)
She concludes, “Womanists generally view theology as ‘God-talk, a way of thinking that keeps the human dimension front and center. For womanists, God-talk must encompass both words and actions in divine-to-human and human-to-human contacts. This contrasts with the idea that theology can be a ‘study of God,’ a process that abstracts theology and blurs the lines of human activity. Womanist theology is a continuing project that participates in the ongoing, full human effort to refine God-talk.” (Pg. 143-144)
This relatively short book is an excellent introduction and overview to the subject, and will be of great help to those “new” to the subject, or wanting a “refresher” course.
