Review

“Wiggins poignantly raises issues of transformation and redemption. Despair and destruction are sweetened by hope and love.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“A very satisfying read.” ―VOYA

“Muses on the dangers of science and medicine and deftly maps out the chain of events that has led to catastrophe, creating a violent world vastly different from ours but still recognizable. With a stirring conclusion and space for a sequel, it's an altogether captivating story. Readers will gladly be bitten by this bug.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on Stung

“This retelling of Sleeping Beauty keeps the reader hooked until the end with the action, mystery, and a bit of romance.” ―Library Media Connection on Stung

“For readers of the Twilight and Hunger Games books who are looking for a paranormal love story with a strong female protagonist.” ―VOYA on Shifting

“There's a Hitchcockian touch to the sinister and growing horde of animals that stalks Maggie . . . a nice departure from the more played-out werewolf plots.” ―BCCB on Shifting

“An engaging story that's difficult to put down. Recommend it to fans of Maggie Stiefvater's Wolves of Mercy Falls series.” ―School Library Journal on Shifting

Enthralling Conclusion
By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession)
I enjoyed the first book in the series and was happy when I learned after finishing it that there was going to be a sequel, it seemed there was still so much that needed to be done and so many that needed to be saved, so many that needed the Cure.

And as I started this one, I realized something very important, I had no idea what in the world was going on. Okay, not a great way to start out a book but, who in the heck was Jack and where was I?

So yeah, I needed a little refresher, or a big refresher and okay, maybe rereading the synopsis would have helped but geesh, I seriously was a little lost and confused there for a chapter or two.

But I realized that while Fo and Bowen and even Jonah are in this, this isn't really their story so much as it is Jack's and truly my being lost had nothing to do with the writing and everything to do with me.

After I got over my initial confusion it didn't take me long to sink right back into Wiggin's world and become reacquainted with the characters (old and new) and I dare say, I just might even like Jack more than I did Fo in the first book. But don't get me wrong, I still have mad love for Fo, Bowen and Jonah, I just so also have made love for Jack, Kevin and Dean.

This book answered so many questions I had from the first book and then some. It shed a whole new (and sometimes horrific) light on how complex the world Wiggin's created really was. Everything was explained better and in more detail as Jack really got a good look at what the world, the Raiders, the Beasts and the people behind the Wall had become and well as the colony.

And even though I say this was more Jack's story, we still get a whole lot of the characters we originally fell in love with and even more so, this is a story about a world and people trying to survive after something devastating and horrific happened to them. This is a story about survival and goodness as well as it is about destruction and evil. It is about love and being strong and doing what it right.

I loved this every bit as much as I did the first, in fact, more so. I am happy with the way it all ended, or maybe I should say, that way it all is beginning and growing and healing.

Wiggin's once again captured my attention and held it with the frightening world and endearing characters that she created and I think it is safe to say that I will be reading anything else of her's that she decides to come out with next.

Great follow up to Stung!
By Step Into Fiction
I was hesitant at first. This book isn't from Fiona's point of view and I didn't realize that. I guess the description didn't lead me to believe it wasn't from her POV either so I was a little surprised when I started reading and it wasn't her. It took some getting used to but once I did, I really enjoyed this book. I'm not sure if I liked it more than the first book or not but regardless, it's close.

We know, from the first book, that there is a cure but the problem is getting it to everyone else or even making it known that it exists. But for Jacqui it's about finding her older brother, Devon and bringing him back safely to their family, where he belongs. But nothing is as easy as it sounds, right?

Besides my shock of it not being told from Fiona, this book took me by the hand and didn't let go until the end. Even then, it never really wanted to let go. I wish there was another book because I'd really like to see a certain character with a HEA (happily ever after) but at the same time, I'm okay with how it ended.

If you loved Stung, you'll definitely enjoy this. You'll be sad, most likely, like me about meeting a new voice but you'll quickly adjust and just dive right in. There's a ton of action, a very cute, beautiful romance threaded in there along with the romance we already saw happened between Fi and Bowen (love his name, btw) plus also a friendship you may have wished was more (or maybe it was just me).

It's taken me awhile to write this review because I haven't been able to figure out how to put in to words my feelings for this book. And while this isn't a very detailed review, it's a book I definitely think you should read. Heck, I don't even think you need to read the first one to enjoy this (though I think you should). It does recap a lot of what you read from the first book nicely. But you won't fall in love with all the characters the way those who have read both. I recommend falling.

Cured was a fantastic sequel and a really fun read. It has action, romance, and wonderful characters.

Quick & Dirty: Cured was a fantastic sequel and a really fun read. It has action, romance, and wonderful characters. I would highly recommend this to anyone that is looking for a great YA dystopian read.

Opening Sentence: A person can survive on sixty pounds of beans and three hundred pounds of rice a year.

The Review:

Jacqui Bloom hasn’t left her house in years. Once the bee virus spread and society fell apart, Jacqui and her family have lived to protect each other. They weren’t lucky enough to be admitted to live in the city so they have fended for themselves out with the beasts and raiders. It isn’t safe for anyone, but it is especially unsafe for any females. There is a shortage of women so the raiders will pay 7 years worth of food to anyone that captures females for them. Because of this, Jacqui cut off all her hair and became Jack to everyone.

Jack’s brother Dean left a year ago to help Fiona and Jonah’s mother get to the rumored settlement in Wyoming, but Dean never returned. Now Jack is determined to find out what happened to her brother and she enlists the help of Fiona and Bowen to make the journey. On the way they make an unlikely ally, Kevin. He helps them to escape the raiders, but there is something about him just doesn’t add up. He has extensive knowledge about the raiders and he seems to know more about Jack than he should. Can they trust him or will he reveal secrets that are likely to get them killed?

Jack was such a wonderful protagonist that I totally loved. It has been years since she has left the confines of her home, and for all that time she learned how to survive if the time ever came for her to leave. She is a good shot and can outrun pretty much anyone. I loved that she was strong and could take care of herself, but at the same time she still had lots of insecurities. She has been pretending to be a boy for years now, which has kept her safe, so when it comes to acting on any feminine feelings she feels awkward. It was endearing to watch her try to flirt and not be so boyish all the time. I also liked that she owned up to the mistakes she made and tried to right any of the wrongs she had committed. You really get to see Jack grow and come of age throughout the story. There were so many things that drew me to Jack and I really enjoyed reading her story.

Kevin was a very intriguing character that was very mysterious. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about him because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I had to gush about him just a little bit. He is a total cutie and the way he treated Jack was so sweet. From the very beginning, I wanted to love him, but you just don’t know if you can trust him or what his motives are. I loved getting to know his story and felt he was a great love interest.

Cured was just a fun dystopian book that was entertaining to read. It has a lighter tone than most dystopian novels and to me it was refreshing. That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t full of action or even some violence, because it has both of those, it just wasn’t overdone like some books are. The romance in the novel did have a tad insta-love feel to it, but for some reason that didn’t bother me at all like it normally does. I thought that Jack and Kevin were really cute together and given Jack’s circumstances, I could see how it would be easy to fall in love quickly. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the plot twists in the story and the pacing of the book was spot on. Once I sat down to read this, I got so engrossed that I ended up finishing it in one sitting. I personally loved the first book in this series, and I thought this was a great addition to the series. Cured brings a whole new cast of characters to the wonderful setting that was created in Stung, but rest assured you get to see all your favorite characters from the first book as well. Wiggins has such amazing writing that is engaging and easy to get lost in. I am a huge fan of her work and will gladly read anything she comes out with in the future. I would highly recommend this series to anyone that is looking for a lighter, yet very entertaining YA dystopian series.

Notable Scene:

He nods. “And all I could think about when it happened is what I would regret not doing if he killed me.”

The look in his eyes makes my breath come a little faster. I quickly look back at his hand and pull a thick chunk of wood out of his skin. “What would you regret? ” A drop of blood oozes out of the hole the splinter left. Using my knuckles, I wipe the blood away. Kevin leans to the side and I look at him. He is staring over my shoulder, out the kitchen door.

I whip around and follow his gaze. There’s nothing there— everything is quiet in the other room. “What are you looking for? ” I whisper, still staring out the door.

“Jack, I know you’re not twelve, and I know you’re . . .”

I turn and face him, and my heart starts pounding. Kevin’s eyes are intense, his pupils huge. He intertwines his fingers with mine and then leans in so close that our lips touch. I freeze, unable to move, to breathe, and stare at his bright eyes. His mouth smiles against mine, and then his eyes close and his lips part the slightest bit. His hand leaves mine, moving to cradle the back of my head. I lay my trembling hands fl at on the table, close my eyes, and let my lips soften.
