About the Author
A. Michael Huberman’s long-term interests were in scientific epistemology and adult cognition and knowledge use. His work focused on education policy, school reform, and the practical translation of research knowledge into effective school practice. His first extensive project was a four-year study of an experimental elementary school’s implementation of Piagetian theories into classroom practice..

Matthew B. Miles, a social psychologist, had a career-long interest in strategies for educational reform. His work focused on planned change in education, group and organizational studies, and the dissemination and implementation of research findings. His first major research project was a four-year study of six new, innovative public schools.

A Good Overview

Scholars interested in brushing up on analyzing qualitative date will benefit from the insights offered by Miles and Huberman. Those seeking to enter this field of inquiry will also be a primary audience for their offering. In this book they present a broad overview of the methody of analyzing data collected in qualitative research.
On the subject of presenting findings, they are to be commended for explaining the value of the use of a matrix. It is a means of clarifying data for academic audiences. Designing a matrix is an act of creativity.
In my opinion they go too far in arguing for the generalization of of results. They sound too much like quantitative researchers. Qualitative and quantitative inquirers have different objectives. There should be no reason to argue for similarities when these differences exist for good reason, i.e., the research questions are framed differently. Different results should be expected. Each method has its set of strenghts and weaknesses. That's why one method compliments the other. Generally speaking, however, this is a worthwhile book that explains what it seeks to explain in a comprehensive way.

What is Qualitative Research, and How Do I Do It?

One of the more practical guides to qualitative research - research based not on numbers and statistics but on deep, narrative studies of a particular example or case. Much qualitative research is vaguely grounded defiant theories that tell you that qualitative research isn't quantitative research - but doesn't tell you what it is. The editors of the Companion attempt to describe the latter.

Helpful essays include the following: Kathleen M. Eisenhardt's essay on building theories from the research itself, not from a preconceived theory that limits observation; Joseph A. Maxwell's and Janet Ward Schofield's essays on what constitutes validity in qualitative research (not universality or replicatibility!); Martyn Hammersley's advocation of "subtle realism;" and Norman Denzin's description of the qualitative research process. A good overview for students attempting their first qualitative research study, researchers in the field, or teachers wanting to describe to other students what this qualitative research stuff is all about.

Yes, this superb little pocket book by Leslie Cuthbert entitled “365 Daily Advocacy Tips” is published by Bloomsbury Professional and gives advocates (solicitors and barristers) across all legal fields some well thought-out, useful and effective practical tips on the advocacy skills needed for 21st century.

These special skills have been honed down, developing over the years to suit the changes in style and judicial attitudes of the day. The book includes the impact of psychology - quite important as any reader and analyst of English Literature will know- to enable practitioners to be more confident in the way one advocates now, and to be of relevance to current practice in 2015 with all the mistakes of the past firmly behind us.

“365 Daily Advocacy Tips” is undoubtedly a text for all advocates, from the beginner just out of law school to the experienced (or think they are experienced) practitioner. We feel having read this book that people in many walks of life, not just lawyers, can benefit from the tips whether involved in civil, criminal or other proceedings especially with the growth of litigants in person in the post ‘legal aid for all’ era.

As the author says, the tips are non-jurisdiction specific and so they are relevant to advocates all over the world, including our rather brash colleagues in the North American continent! The content of the book covers a range of helpful quotes, points from psychology and of course best practice points to gain the requisite brownie points with the judge.

Cuthbert has included brief snippets of useful information giving as wide a range of interesting pointers and hints as possible which will give us all a few ideas about how to tackle some of the more hideously difficult cases. Unlike most books about advocacy, this one provides useful insight into psychology which is often overlooked, and it also explains how to break down the rules of argument and rhetoric which is a good discipline to adopt early on in your practice.

One other constructive observation is the coverage of acronyms to help remember techniques (a good training device), useful quotes from history and literature which can be used in cases (but don’t bore the judge) and references to other texts both legal and non-legal which makes the book more than just a guide for the lawyer advocate. Politicians might also find it helpful!

One of our contemporary expert advocates who are established as seriously good in court is Iain Morley QC. He is well quoted when he writes in favour of these tips saying:

"this book is a good idea… what I like is there will be one idea every day - and only one. Your mind will not get jumbled. Think on what you read... some ideas you will like. Others may not work for you. With advocacy, this is always the way. But the point is to try things out - one day at a time."

One can see from Iain’s seminal work “The Devil's Advocate” now in a third edition from Sweet and Maxwell of such sage advice for modern practice.

The advocacy suggestions given throughout are rightly described as “packed with pithy, serious, amusing, and thought-provoking tips for each day of the year, from a refreshingly diverse range of sources” and of course, it is the originality of the advocate’s approach that can make a profound difference to the outcome of a case.

What we liked in particular was that the tips give a fascinating insight into the principles of good advocacy whilst offering essential practical knowledge of related topics such as how people make decisions, indicators of credibility and the 'rules' of argument and rhetoric.

And unlike many advocacy guides “365 Daily Advocacy Tips” gives a refreshing insight into this world of psychology and how to break down the rules of argument and rhetoric so you can succeed with your approach.

It offers most suitable acronyms to help one remember techniques with useful quotes. Lengthy and studious volumes of advocacy have had their place and they don’t feature much in the ‘teaching’ of advocacy if it can, indeed be taught, but once in a while just a morsel of advice might be needed to change an entire day's work and this is where it might be found.

Cuthbert’s list is a calendar of tales and tips from the world of advocacy and it does prove an able companion for every advocate serious about continuous and incremental improvement in their knowledge, skill and practice with the added bonus of plenty of space to jot down your own ideas throughout the book.

We can give you some examples taken directly from the book without spoiling it for those readers new to advocacy: when questioning always remember to KISS: “Keep it Short and Simple”; and in Cross-Examination (XX) aim to TELL the witness the answer you want rather than ASK for a response such as "you were at home, correct?" not "were you at home?"- see the subtle or not so subtle difference; and never forget that correlation does not equal causation as the author points out.

Some common sense points are also explored: do not read out the entirety of your argument (in other words written down as it doesn’t work and remember your delivery!) or seek to memorize the totality of what you wish to convey (because that doesn’t work either).

The author mentions that a common helpful approach is to remember the introduction and the last paragraph which is a basic structural point: "begin with the end in mind" is a useful concept to focus upon. Absolutely right!

Other sensible guidance includes: how the advocate should dress (outside formal robing) and how to present oneself which can be an incredibly important factor even in 2015 after years of sloppy dressing however ones feels about this.

And remember the nature of the judiciary itself as one judge has put it: "the burden of proof is on the advocate in the polyester suit!" Hm! But please do not think that this is some sort of sartorial snobbery- it isn’t, it’s merely a practicality in reality… and that is why Cuthbert’s book is an exercise in reality and how to win in 2015… getting the book is tip 366.

David Greig was born in Edinburgh. In 1990 he co-founded Suspect Culture to produce collaborative, experimental theatre work. Fr. Juan R. Vélez is a Roman Catholic priest and writer. Before ordination to the priesthood he studied medicine and specialized in internal medicine. He is chaplain at Darien Study Center in Darien, Illinois. He is author of several medical ethics and theology articles and the book "Passion for Truth, the Life of John Henry Newman" (TAN Books 2012). With Mike Aquilina he is co-author of "Take Five, Meditations with John Henry Newman" (Our Sunday Visitor 2010).

How to Define and Obtain a Quality University Education

This book by Juan Velez, who has written a fine biography on one of the giants of higher education, Cardinal John Henry Newman, is a practical and insightful guide for students and parents alike on the meaning of a quality university education and where to obtain one. The author describes the 'crisis of education'' at many modern universities focused more on imparting specialized, practical knowledge than on educating the whole person with the goal of developing character, virtue and intellect. The book contains practical advice on how to identify those universities that offer a broad-based, enriching liberal arts education and how to design a worthwhile curriculum by selecting courses and electives that favor intellectual, personal and spiritual growth. This book would be an invaluable guide to anyone seeking a thought-provoking examination of what constitutes the most enriching and complete university education possible.

A must read for college counselors and parents

At times shockingly accurate about today’s American culture, Fr. Juan Velez provides an honest and important critique of the curriculum of today’s American universities. A University Educations for the 21st Century: The Opening of the American Mind provides a morally-centered guide path for high school juniors, college counselors and parents to help them evaluate their choices for a worthwhile education.. Fr. Velez suggests the higher education community step back from the current trend of replacing traditional courses in Western Civilization and liberal arts with courses on contemporary culture, politics, gender and career training. He asks, Is there a path to happiness and wisdom when everything is taught to be relative? I highly recommend this book to educators, counselors and parents facing the college admission process today.

Fr. Juan Velez answers these and more questions you might have about University Education in the 21st century.
This book is aimed for parents, prospective University students, and educators.
It will help you discern why adding Liberal Arts electives to your education will help it form it better, and help the student learn to reason, and not just learn.
He also explains how many Universities have changed the true meaning of Liberal Arts, and the subjects, and gives advise on how to choose College Campus, Subjects, and Teachers.
A wonderful book, that every parent should also read way before your children are College bound. A Liberal Arts education can start earlier in life, even from home.

About the Author

Oliver Vogel is a certified Enterprise and IT Architect with IBM Switzerland. He leads, coaches, and acts as consultant for international projects in architecture topics such as architectural design, implementation, evaluation, and governance. He is also the worldwide IBM Enterprise Architecture Education leader.

Ingo Arnold is a Global Enterprise Architect with Novartis, Switzerland. In addition to his role at Novartis, Ingo is an Associate Professor at the Universities of Basel, Switzerland, and Lörrach, Germany. He is also a well-known speaker at IT conferences, where he holds presentations on topics such as SOA, IT Security, and IT Governance for international audiences.

Arif Chughtai has been a successful freelance IT consultant and IT trainer for more than 10 years. His specialist fields include software architecture, service-oriented architectures, object-oriented software development, and model-driven software development. He regularly shares his expert knowledge in lectures, presentations, and technical articles.

Truly a Holistic View of Software Architecture

This book is truly a holistic view of software architecture.

This book structures the book around an Architecture Orientation Framework. The framework is based on open question words. A chapter has been dedicate to each. The framework provides a nice common vocabulary that makes team communication easier.

The chapters of the book include Architectures and Architecture Disciplines (WHAT), Architecture Perspectives (WHERE)' Architecture Requirements (WHY), Architecture Means (WITH WHAT), Organizations and Individuals (WHO), and Architecture Method (HOW).

Each chapter is laid out in the same logical format. They start with a nice concept map that puts the elements of the chapter into a nice contextual overview. They continue with the body of the chapter and end with a summary and a nice further reading section. Chapter 8 is unique in that it has a ton of really nice checklists to help you assess the various requirements of an architecture.

There are a ton of topics covered in this book. Some of them are Zachman Framework, Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing, 4+1 View Model, Open Group Architecture Framework, Requirements Characteristics and Types, Organizational Requirements, System Requirements, Qualities and Constraints, Requirements in the Context of Architecture, Loose Coupling, High Cohesion, Separation of Concerns, Abstraction, Modularity, Traceability, Procedural Approaches, Object Orientation, Component Orientation, Model-Driven Software Development, Aspect Orientation, Tactics, Styles, Patterns, Layered Architectures, Dataflow Architectures, Repositories, n-Tier Architecture, Rich Client versus Thin Client, Peer-To-Peer, XML and Other X Standards, Databases and Persistence of Business Objects, Architecture and Development Processes, Architecture Method, and Maintaining the Architecture.

Software Architecture is necessary for building complex software applications. All software has an architecture. You can either plan that architecture, or just let it happen. The later delivers chaos and legacy software every time. I have seen a lot of teams out there in denial. They deliver software that is over budget, well past promised dates, and so buggy more team members are required to maintain it than were needed to build it.

This book can help you get a clear understanding of what software architecture is all about. It can help you move past the emerging architecture mess and onto a planned one. One that has the right amount of supporting documentation that keeps the software from being legacy software the day it is delivered.

One thing I like about this book is that it is not a reinvention of the wheel. The authors do a great job of incorporating industry best practices that have withstood the test of time, as well as included all the newer elements of software architecture that have come about in recent years.

I have 15 years of software architecture experience and have read tons of other books on the subject. This one will stay near me on all my gigs. It not only makes a good cover to cover read, it also works great as a reference.

All in all I highly recommend this book to any software architect. The book is good for all levels of experience.
